Value of Pass Rushers May Be Decreasing | Ravens Final Drive

Sacks and pressures were down across the league this season as more offenses and quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball faster.

So you want to make our team worse?

    Jack Dobbins

Coverage on the backend is far more important per analytics, we only have so much money to spend. They would bring them both back if we just had money to burn but we don’t. Offense scored 3 points in a playoff game, clear where money needs to be spent

    matrixphijr

This team was middle of the pack (14th) in sacks but 2nd in points allowed. As DeCosta said, total sacks are down league-wide this year. Maybe that’s the lack of preseason and training camp, maybe that’s just the way the league is progressing with QBs getting the ball out faster. But the two teams that played in the AFC Championship had fewer sacks than the Ravens and were middle of the pack in points allowed. The point is sacks aren’t everything.
And to the Ravens, they may not even be much of anything. Martindale is still going to blitz a large amount of the time, regardless of who he has rushing the passer. Like Jack said, the coverage–not just to our team but to the league as a whole, with passing offenses really starting to flourish league-wide–is much more important to how the defense performs statistically.

We do need pass rush help big time

    Jack Dobbins

Coverage matters far more per the analytics, we also blitz more than any team in football. OLB’s aren’t worth top dollar in our scheme

    Warner Green

    Von Miller and Khalil Mack.

    Nik Workman

@Warner Green You can’t use two of the best players to sum up an entire argument

These Pretzels Are Making Me Thirsty

@Jack Dobbins we blitz more than anyone with some soft pass rushers

King Lex

Pass rush helps the secondary and vice versa

Rather have a pass rush. Look at the Steelers

    Robby Dailey

@First name Last name Look at the Steelers when one of their elite pass rushers went down. Losing Bud quite possibly derailed their whole season. There’s no way we just stumble into DPOY candidate like Watt and another elite guy to attack the other side, and it would cripple us to try and pay for it.

@Robby Dailey still rather have a pass rush than a good secondary

Adamame

Cap. Interior pass rush or elite edge rushers will always be needed. If the line can’t hold up, you disrupt the flow of the offense. Example: Us vs Buffalo in the playoffs.

    Kris Scott

    or us vs the chiefs

we must have had the highest number of blitz plays and the least amount of sacks ratio in the league this last year. no point in minimizing coverage if the generated pass rush doesn’t pay off

    matrixphijr

Blitz % per play was the highest in the league (44.1%). QB Pressures (hurries + knockdowns + sacks as a % of QB dropbacks) was 7th highest in the league (25.9%). The Chiefs were 11th, the Bills were 25th. Both teams also ranked lower in sacks than the Ravens, who came in at 14th overall. The Steelers at 34.2% are the only team with a noticeable difference in Pressure % (2nd place is 28.3%). Having them as our intra-division rival has likely led to the comparison bias among Ravens fans that our team is somehow much worse off than the rest of the league as a whole.
In short, sacks aren’t the only important stat. Also, coverage is much more important in the current state of the game, and Ravens were 2nd in total points allowed, despite these perceived “flaws.”

Jack Dobbins

QB’s are getting rid of the ball at the fastest rate in NFL history, we don’t have much cap space for a luxury signing. Bring back Bowser, draft an OLB high, spend on a veteran #1 WR

    Chris Cordova

Bro we use this formula every year somethings Has to change !

    HScott410_

bowser was missing in action against buffalo, he not a game changer

    Lord Have

@HScott410_ neither was judon, or Yannick. St least bowser is cheap

    MATTEEVEE

    Very good point JD

    Lord Have

Also I would let Ferguson, and McPhee play 1st downs, draft a outside linebacker in the 1st. And resign bowser and yannick

Ty

Og Phee brought the heat I want him back on the team

    jgutta2486

    yessir !!!

    Mike Miller

He did! He like it in bmore!

Elijah Sexton

Can we please invest into our O-line? We keep getting exposed up front year after year… 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Hollywood jae

Definitely need help upfront but saying year after year is not accurate

    Willie Johnson

@Hollywood jae : Every year in the playoffs the OL folds like wet toilet paper.

Chris

CHEIFS ARE OUR TOP THREAT !!!! BUILD A TEAM TO TAKE THEM OUT

Chris

Ray 52 for life could help our defence hes smart ge knows defence

Schwarzer Shark

Bring back Bowser and McPhee

HScott410_

thats why you cant replace Judon, his impact dont show up on the stat sheet.. if forcing bad throws counted as sacks he would have 15 -20 a year

    3D Winters

true dat, Judon is all over the field and his contribution a lot of times don’t show up on the stat sheets. Judon be dropping back and doing it all.

sammyvh11

You can’t rush the passer anymore due to the rules and formations. Even the greats of old would not have anywhere near the sacks.

Spenser Bainbridge

yeah except when its us! Good pass rushing killed the ravens this season

Austin Johnson

Actually you can get to the QB it’s called beating your man.

Joe Santana

Honestly we need faster Lbs kinda like Dbs the game is always evolving

Rich McClaren

Keep Yannick and Judon tf

McDiamond

We’ve overinvested in our defense. Our offense is most important

bigcuzz 410

I expect both of those top guys on the outside to be back long-term

Matthew Colwell

Judon sacks come against bad teams generally lol
