How do you get the ‘expected’ YAC when a guy is open, or has a clear path? Most of these were about guys with momentum running past guys without, and one where blocking was the reason.

I believe ‘expected’ is basically just their average. You’ll see statisticians use ‘expected value’ to denote such.

I mean I get what you’re saying for a few but a lot of these “open runs” you call have defenders failing to perform basic fundamentals of tackling or angling. That’s where the expected comes from. In a correctly executed defensive play, the plays would stop instead of their extra gains
