Pittsburgh Steelers acquire LB Joe Schobert in a trade with Jacksonville

Learn a little more about the newest Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joe Schobert

The Steelers bolstered their defense, agreeing to a trade for inside linebacker Joe Schobert with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers are giving the Jaguars their sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft in exchange.

Schobert, who is entering his sixth NFL season, has recorded 535 tackles, 326 solo stops, 26 quarterback hits, 21 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks, 24 pass defenses and nine interceptions.

Schobert spent the 2020 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, after playing his first four seasons in the league with the Cleveland Browns. He finished last season with a team-high 141 tackles, included 84 solo stops, two and a half sacks, six tackles for a loss, four pass defenses, and three interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown. He also had two forced fumbles.

Schobert was drafted by the Browns in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, playing in all 16 games his rookie season and finishing with 16 tackles and 12 special teams stops.

He had a breakout year his second season, finishing second in the NFL with 142 tackles while being selected to the Pro Bowl. He played every defensive snap for the Browns and recorded three sacks, four pass defenses, three forced fumbles and one interception.

His solid play continued the next two seasons, playing in 13 games in 2018 with 103 tackles, six pass defenses, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. In 2019 he recorded a team-high 133 tackles with two forced fumbles, nine pass defenses and four interceptions. He was the only player in the NFL to have at least 130 tackles and at least four interceptions. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 24, when he had two interceptions for the second consecutive game.

He played college ball at Wisconsin where he played in 45 games, starting 28, and had 172 tackles, 13.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles. He earned All-American honors in 2015 while winning team MVP honors.
