Pete Carroll: Drew Lock would’ve been first QB in 2022 NFL Draft | Pro Football Talk | NBC Sports

Thomas Charter

Nobody is giving Cleveland anything for a guy they know will have to be cut sooner or later. The Browns need to rip that band-aid off and move on already. And if the Hawks can invite Baker to camp for a try-out with nothing guaranteed…then Pete will have played this exactly the way he should have.

    Mexican Zeppelin

Pete reminds me of Bill on this one, arms folded, sitting back with his hand on the table upside down, staring the other guys down, stone faced.

    Justin Thompson

@Calerie Valcin you can have a hand of cards facing up on the table and your arms folded

    8th Account

The Browns don’t have to cut Baker. Watson is only making $1 million this year, and the Browns have the 2nd most cap space. The Browns should hold on to Baker as long as possible to get a trade, and if not then oh well, at least they didn’t give an asset away for nothing.

A Heroic Taxi Driver

There is a VERY good chance that Denver didn’t use Lock in an optimal way. Nevertheless, he did make some awful decisions.

    Mexican Zeppelin

We’ve been hearing that story since at least Jeff George: rocket arm, bad decisions, out of the league. If I were Lock I’d try to copy Tom Brady and study film incessantly. Well, maybe a little less than that, but the idea is to get a PhD in defensive looks, and especially the habits of them during game week. Don’t be out there guessing where a safety might be. Watch where he goes over and over and drill it into your brain.

Henry St.Clair

Good content as always mike. Love your unique point of view as a former attorney

Alt Bae

Seahawks know the Browns have no option but to cut Mayfield, so they won’t show a lick of interest until they do

    Jr Gomez

    @Tim Goble it’s cute you’re a Baker groupie😂😂

    Tim Goble

@Jr Gomez I’m not. But it’s not far fetched to think the Hawks will act disinterested then once Baker is cut they sign him for 1million and see what he has got. Remember 2 years ago he was on a team with a great defense and running game and he led them to an 11-5 record and playoff appearance. He has proven he can do it and Drew hasn’t. That was my point

    Dakiller831

@Tim Goble bakker brings unwanted drama, he will break up this team like he did the browns plus im sure he wants wayyy more than 1.5 mil. Hawks just have to suck it up this year and see where it takes them.

    Tim Goble

@Dakiller831 It seems OBJ and his family brought the drama. What drama did Baker bring to his team until he requested a trade? And if he’s cut he can be signed at league minimum. So, if he doesn’t get a higher offer AND he wants to try and earn a starting spot he could actually play for 1.2 million or something around that price

    Dakiller831

@Tim Goble but its clear that baler was a big part of the problem in Cleveland for objs family to jump in and call him out. I don’t see him anymore of a leader compared to Lock. And im sure he won’t sign for less than 5 mil

CB3347

He might be good in seattle they drafted the next barry sanders strong running game.

reynarain

I believe Drew Lock would be by far the number 1 overall pick in the 2021 CFL draft.

    Ron Lopez

@funkyflights he hasn’t improved since his rookie year

    funkyflights

@Ron Lopez … Right but he also had coaching changes and no real stability, so let’s see what he can do, Pete Carol has a pretty good eye for QB’s, if it’s not there he’s not gonna go forward… Look at how the Matt Flynn thing worked out, Pete’s not shy …

    Ron Lopez

@funkyflights stability? He had a top 10 defense all 3 years here and an decent offense built around him. He lost us the bengals game by himself

    funkyflights

@Ron Lopez … Yeah, he’s made mistakes, but he’s also had coaching changes during his development, with him it’s definitely a confidence thing … Seahawks aren’t done yet anyway, they might bring someone else in at some point ..

    Ron Lopez

@funkyflights I watched Geno Smith and he is underwhelming but Lock is very underwhelming, inaccurate, and just throws into double/triple coverage for nothing. Lock is just not the answer

Final statement was spot on Seahawks know 50% of the SuperBowls have been won by just regular QB’s. That number is even more if you count the losing QBs.

    W S

And stats also show that teams have not usually won SB when the QB is the top paid player on the team. Russ wanted to be the highest paid player for every contract. Eventually it has to end and this was the time to do it and still get something in return. Russ would not have signed another contract in Seattle – there were plenty of indicators and statements.

    Ramone DeCurta

Those Super Bowls win by average QBs were also win with big-time coaches with big-time run games and defenses.

    Pete Carroll isn’t a big-time NFL coach; he’s a big-time college recruiter!

    Ramone DeCurta

@W S : Correlation doesn’t equate to causation, so be careful. What you have cited is a correlation.

    ssjgoat27

@Ramone DeCurta pete carrol also created that whole seahawks team lmao that is a bad statement by you

jwkreid

The thing is, Drew Lock could still be a star. He has star potential. It is no surprise he would have been the first one off the board in this class. Just too inconsistent

Sublime Music Channel

He’s right. He WOULD’VE been the first QB off the board in this year’s draft. And a bust.

SHARPtrader

Pete is making some good points…there is still a lot of upside if Lock can make some improvements. Also important to note is Lock is only making something like $1.5m in salary this year! Basically getting a chance at a franchise QB for a million bucks in salary with no obligation beyond this season. If he does pan out, extend him or franchise tag him. Reward FAR outweighs risk IMO

    Jared Orton

Pipe dream. lock is a solid backup. Gonna be a long season

    AJ Ajala

Lol not my team please. We are drafting Bryce young next year . Pete Carroll knows what’s up.

    robert marquez

SO why didnt they resign Bobby Wagner if the QB aint making no money did Wagner realy lose more then speed..You keep players that gave you 10 plus years at all costs and Wagner wanted to stay in Seattle

    Swirvin' Birds

@robert marquez Because they have a lot of young talent at the LB position. Simple as that. The team is trying to get younger.

Hate the way they let him go but I understand why they did.

    Zack Davis

He blowing smoke. He knows Levi Lewis is gonna beat Those guys out

Geoff Simpkins

Can’t say I’ve seen a lot of this guy, but both games I did watch (second halves, actually), he carved us up. Maybe I just saw his two best halves?

Justin Peters

I’d hope any player with 3 years of NFL experience would be the first pick against all other college players.

Zach McLean

Lock has a big ceiling but he needed time. Needed 2-3 years to develop before being thrown to the wolves.

J M

Does it really mean much tho I love lock but this years qb class wasn’t strong at all💯 glad we got Wilson still love lock tho🧡💙🙏🏾🔥

Backyard Specialist

Maybe the Seahawks know it’s better to be patient and it’s not about winning this season so why grab another sub par quarterback (they have 3 already). Wait till next years draft they already have draft capital build a team then get a rookie quarterback. Also they’re watching how Baker is acting right now and probably shaking there head. He’s just not the guy.

SAINT 65

Carroll having to start Smith, Luck, and/or Mayfield would increase my enjoyment of the 2022 season immensely!
Post game talks would be priceless.

Peter Maharajh

Nic Foles won a Super Bowl.😲
Any decently able QB can win if the Defence plays Balls Out and the rest can support.

Swirvin' Birds

I don’t think Seattle is worried about having just an NFL average QB. We are going to see defense and ground & pound again.

Serendipitous Slim

As a Jets fan, I often forget Geno Smith is still in the league

Bob Caddock

I found it odd that in this segment of their show these two seemed to understand Seattle’s philosophy that you win games with a balanced team. At one point they point out Seattle won SB 48 with a great defense and a rookie QB. But, when the trade was announced it was these same two who said how could Seattle be so dumb? Did they not see the cycle Seattle was in – just good enough to be in the bottom 1/2 of the draft, but too poor (due to Wilson’s contract) to do anything in free agency.
