This will be Thielen’s last season, and he hasn’t finished a regular season since 2018 so we’ll need a WR1b for the playoffs. Good WRs cost $25m in FA, but we can get a good CB or Safety for $12-14m, so it makes more sense to draft one, especially since KO might have his choice of the top 4.
The NFL is an arms race and we have an advantage with JJ. I don’t think KO will give that up to play defence. That was the previous guy Zimmer’s plan.

@Rylan Frost Thielen’s contract of $19m guarantees in the first few days of the 2023 season. There is no way Kwesi will pay $20m for a 33 yo WR that hasn’t finished a regular season since 2019 (he’s missed 15 games in the last 3 years). Thielen’s contract is only getting $11m this year.
Thielen is already the 2nd oldest starting WR in the league, and 1 of only 4 over 30!
Kwesi can save $13m in cap space by cutting him in 2023, and another $16m by cutting Harry, so it’s almost inevitable they’re both gone before the start of the 2023 season.
They’ll probably both retire to avoid getting cut, and tbh I’m expecting their form to start falling off this season anyway. It is possible if their form holds up they might negotiate a cheap Peterson type contract to run it back once more.
That’s why I think Kwesi will be looking at this draft a lot differently to what most fans and analysts are expecting, because I don’t think he’ll want to head into the 2023 draft needing to find a starting WR1b, and a Safety, or starting a rookie Safety in 2023.
We are in prime position to pick one of the premier WRs at 12. That still leaves day 2 to draft a promising CB and Safety to groom behind Peterson and Harry this season, who would be also be injury back up for them.
That would leave Kwesi free to go after a QB in the 2023 draft. That could still leave enough scope on day 2 to replace Kendricks & Hicks at LB if Dye or Surratt etc don’t progress, or C or RG if Wyatt and Bradbury also don’t progress.
If Kwesi clutters up next seasons draft with desperate needs for a starting WR and Safety in 2023, then that will probably delay upgrading the positions that many fans are most fixated on – QB, C and CB.

Awesome re-sign, love this guy and his personality, good player still too. He knows he is not the elite dude he used to be, but he knows teams are not stupid and he is the best corner on the field, hence the low target numbers.

if he has a decent year I guarantee we can move him to safety for a year or two as well. Run defense and tackling has never been an issue for him.
