NFL ‘had to come down hard’ on Calvin Ridley for gambling on games | Pro Football Talk | NBC Sports

No Thanks

most of the refs are betting on games and they are fixing games.

    Neil Adlington

Do you have an agenda? If not, why are you here? Is it because gambling is also your thing? Help me out. You apparently believe football has as much legitimacy as professional wrestling does.. So again why then are you here?

    O-D-X

@David Montgomery And where is that integrity even more important … Oh yeah the stock market and look how much insider trading is done by just our elected officials. How can you hope to contain this, it is so easy to bypass any rules by the players or others to make their side profits.

Robert Lee

Remember Paul Hornung and Alex Karas? Both suspended for a year for gambling in the early sixties… now there is a team in the gambling center of North America. Hypocrite much?

    Night_Wolf

Las Vegas is just a city you can gamble in Denver

    David Montgomery

Dealers can’t play at their own tables. There’s no hypocrisy in this. Player are allowed to gamble, just not on “their table” aka the NFL.

    Mike & Chris G

    I agree 💯.

    Robert Lee

@Night_Wolf For me it’s the symbolism of Vegas and gambling when it was supposed to be such a taboo

Arnold Oliver

Yeah look what happened to Pete Rose

    LaQueena Williams

    Pete white too

Jo NoSaY

It was the Falcons….so not like he (or anyone else) was betting on ML or the Over 😂🤦🏾‍♂️

    B'alam K'inich

Sure… but if it’s okay for players and coaches to do this, outcomes become guaranteed and the NFL becomes a complete sham. It’ll be no different that WWE and nobody watches “Sports” that have guaranteed outcomes.

Hellaa Average

Ther is no more of a case for faulty integrity than an owner bribing coaches and possibly players. That is far worse than gambling or using insider information.

    David Montgomery

Absolutely true. If Flores can prove his allegations against Ross true, Ross will almost certainly be forced out.

Biggs Jones

I miss Golic on Mondays with Florio.

Struttta

So an Athlete was actually forced to sit out games due to gambling? Shoutout to Michael Jordan!

    O-D-X

And Alex Karras, Paul Hornung, Art Schlicter, Pete Rose and on and on. I mean Rose got a lifetime ban, Jordan got a “3 year ban” retirement, Karras and the others got 1 year. I think one year is lenient. But the proxy betting has been going on forever it is not new. I worked at a Sports Book and there were bettors that we just gave a wink and nod to because we knew they were placing bets for others. I won’t name names even if I were called to trial so don’t ask.

Claude Hutchful

But then owners can get “special massages” do drugs and what not, but no punishment for them.

    Hard truth, not soft lies!

Allegedly ask the Head Coach to tank for 100 grand a game!

    CrunkPopeye

And show nonstop draft kings ads

Doug Baker

If players gamble the league is done.

    B'alam K'inich

Basically. And that’s why the NFL has to stand strong on this. Once there’s legal incentive to throw games, we might as well start watching the USFL.

    O-D-X

If you don’t think the majority of players aren’t already doing this, you are wrong. They just do it through a proxy. I worked in a Sports book and there were many bettors we knew were placing bets for other people. He just was stupid and get caught. This is not like fixing games. Not enough money can be made gambling for these players to risk throwing a game … The refs and some low level coaches and execs, though, that is a horse of a different color.

Christian Mitchell

Anything Mike Golic does I am all ears!!!

Stan Long

Every NFL game is being fixed.
Just ask the fans of the losing teams. ..

    B'alam K'inich

    What’s the basis?

    ngc 5139

@B’alam K’inich He was being sarcastic.

ShokusApolloTV

He just looks dumb to me for citing that he needed to walk away for personal reasons just to do this lol

    Lee Bike

He will have plenty of time to gamble now.

Mike & Chris G

Hey Mike did you hear what Golic said. IT’S AGAINST THE RULES. Whether the league is in bid with gamblers matters not.

Eric C

Ask Pete Rose if the NFL came down hard

RamsnDodgersfan

Lifetime bann! You have to protect even the appearance of fixing.

    O-D-X

Then you might as well ban half the league all officials, many executives and owners and … Get the idea. I worked in a Sports book, we know this happens by proxy all the f’ing time.

    RamsnDodgersfan

@O-D-X you can’t let guys log on to fanduel and bet as Ridley did. If half of everyone is doing it, which they are not, then yes you would need to bann half of everyone. Everyone who you actually have proof, not conjecture, that they are gambling on the sport the league must get rid of them for good…the integrity of the outcome has to be protected aggressively.

    O-D-X

@RamsnDodgersfan And as I said they do it through proxies. You won’t catch them and far more do it than you realize.

    RamsnDodgersfan

@O-D-X regardless of speculation about using proxies, which Rose used as well and they did catch him, when you catch someone betting you have to ban for life, period. Ridley actually got caught betting against his team, which is the ultimate concern. Also, the amount anyone can bet is small vs the wages guys make so very few will risk gambling.

Lindy Tucker

So pete rose gets life…ridley gets a year

Tracy Wade

I miss seeing Golic every morning on Mike and Mike! Didn’t know he was on this with Florio!

Aaron Smith

Still weird seeing Golic on any other platform besides ESPN

Nick H

Sport betting is only growing. And this will continue to getting worse.

Thomas Muscheck

Mike Golic. One hundred percent correct. Got to say Florio has an excellent stable of counterpoint co-hosts. One year for stupidity.. or greed.. isn’t “too harsh” either.
