I Know about everyone, not because of their own opinion but, because of what the media has drilled into people’s heads believe Zach Wilson is the next Joe Nameth.
Never heard of Zach Wilson or Trey Lance 6 months ago and they become the 2nd and 3rd overall pick in this draft?? Just shows you how desperate the GMs are to hit huge on a QB, they want it to work so badly I really think they convince themselves the player is the next Payton Manning (there is no next Tom Brady so I went with last great QB).
I know nothing at all about Trey Lance so I have no opinion. Maybe he is Steve McNair but maybe he is Jamarcus Russel.   The 49rs have no idea but they are praying to someone. It may work it may not. He may be great he may be horrible or he may be the next Ryan Fitzpatrick, a competant NFL starter . NO ONE KNOWS!
As to Zach Wilson. I do not get any of the ridiculous hype.
I watched as many BYU games from last year I could find. Basically, Wilson had a great year. Throwing to,  mostly,  wide open recievers and had so much time to throw sometimes I was in disbelief.
Again, I know more about Wilson than Lance. My guess, that I know no one cares about but I’m usually right about the Jets, is there is a VERY good chance Wilson Is a total bust. The Jets will be laughed at for years as Sam Darnold becomes Carolina’s starting QB for the next 15 years(is it only me that does not look at things with  distorted, NY Jets glasses on?)  Carolina had the number 8 pick. They have known for a very long time they would have had a chance to pick one of these hyped QBs besides Lawrence.  Why,  would they trade for, horrible, the Jets ineptitude is all his fault, Sam Darnold?
The head coach that the Jets wanted but,  of course,  didn’t get because the GM didnt want to give up any control. It’s OK though Adam Gase was available,  all was good. This is the guy(Matt Ruhle) the Jets could have had, that is being touted as the next big head coach and he makes Darnold the starting QB of a playoff ready team when, the second worst or the worst team in the NFL says he is a bust at 23?
Why do you think? Because Ruhle knows he just got the best QB talent available besides Lawrence for about nothing. Including Wentz.
Darnold has a tremendous amount of talent. A 21 year old, no matter how gifted, can not get put in a situation in which he has useless coaches and about no real NFL WRs or TE or RB to utilize. Add the worst offensive line in the league and please tell me who could have been successful in that , terrible situation?
Give the Jets Patrick Mahomes with that roster. Mahomes is the best NFL QB RIGHT NOW and the whole world saw how the best QB in the league plays under constant pressure. Not very well.
That has been Darnold’s NFL life.
The Jets have done some VERY stupid things, things that are beyond belief (choosing Ken O’Brien instead of Dan Marino in 1983. Definitely costing them at least a couple Superbowl appearances if not wins.  I will never forget that day. Marino should not have even been there to draft in the 20s. They needed a QB and there was an obvious choice to everyone, even an 11 year old, myself.
The Jets went way out of their way to mess this up. They found someone named Ken O’Brien, from Cal Davis, division 2? They left Dan Marino for the Dolphins and picked someone not even Marino himself knew of in any way.
I do not want to be unfair to O’Brien because he was a good NFL starter at times. He is not Dan Marino.
In 1984, when a penalty was not called every time a defensive player touched a WR or a QB, Marino threw for a league record with over 5,000 yard passing. Now, that’s not a huge deal. Brady has done it, Manning, both of them I think, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, maybe more have passed 5,000 yards passing in a season.
In 1984 that never happenened.
Marino is the best pure QB I have ever seen play and it’s not close. I am still waiting to see a QB with as fast a release of the football. He got it out of his hand so fast you almost missed it. Go watch video if you are too young to remember. Never forget, in 1985 the Chicago Bears were so much better than everyone else they made a joke of the regular season the playoffs and won the Superbowl 46-10. The best defense I have ever seen play.
They should have not been beat at all in 85. Should have, easily been 16-0.
They ran into Marino on a Monday night. Marino’s quick release was too fast for even that all time great defense. The Bears were killing opposing QBs that year but couldn’t get to Marino before the ball was gone.  The Dolphins scored 38 points and we’re the only team to beat the 1985 Bears.  The 85 Bears gave up an average of 10.7 point a game in their other 15 games. Marino hung 38 on them. The Dolphins came a game short of playing the Bears again in the 85 Superbowl. The happiest that the Dolphins lost that AFC championship game? The Bears.
The Jets had a Much better overall team than the Dolphins. If they had not thought their way out of having a hall of fame QB that was better than Nameth those mid 80’s Jets would have been in multiple Superbowls. Not sure if they could have won any, the NFC was very, very good then. At least they would have had a chance to actually win a superbowl.) Sorry, just one, the worst,  example of how truly bad the Jets have been at drafting players. No matter who the GM is it continues.
They hit on Darelle Revis, John Abraham (couldn’t keep him anyway(, Jamal Adams(see a theme here,  trade all our best players), Chad Pennington was a great choice for where he went in the first round. If you look at the other QBs drafted in a similar spot. Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker ect, ect all the next Zach Wilson.
Or how about Sam Bradford #1 overall pick, Jamarcus Russell #1 overall pick, Mitch Trubisky #2 overall pick, all were hyped just like Wilson. I have nothing at all against Wilson. He is a tremendous athlete, he had a unbelievable college season but only one, against very poor competition. Then I hear he is a spoiled, always get what he want rich kid. That fits perfectly in NY. He’ll be very happy, after he throws 3 interceptions, to talk to the NY media. All I can envision is the young kid being destroyed by the pressure of NY.  He’s never experienced any pressure to perform at an elite level ever before.
Trevor Lawrence is completely different. He’s been the next great QB since gradgauating high school and lived up to all of it and more. Not much of a doubt that if healthy Lawrence will be a star. Wilson, yes, I  hope is great but what I hope and what I believe are not the same thing.
Someone should tell these NFL GMs that. I could just keep going there are so many. What I’m trying to say is all this hype around Wilson is so illogical, will do nothing but put way too much pressure on a kid, 22? He is jumping from BYU, best defense they faced I assume was Coastal Carolina, to real NFL defenses. How anyone can look at film of Wilson playing against such bad college defenses then put this tremendous amount of pressure on him to be the team’s savior. They will ruin him just like they did Darnold. If you think it would have been any different if they drafted Josh Allen you are just wrong. Allen has success in Buffalo because of the coaching and the team around him. If they switched spots we would be talking about the Jets trading Allen to pick Wilson and everyone wondering why they didn’t just pick Darnold.
