How Invested Are The Bills in Analytics? | Bills by the Numbers Ep. 49

On this week's episode of Bills by the Numbers podcast presented by FanDuel, Chris and Steve take a look at a recent ESPN survey to find out which NFL teams are the most analytically advanced. The two take a look where the Bills fall in that conversation. Which teams are the best at 4th down conversions and what does it mean for team success? Steve is quizzed on that in the Numbers Game. ESPN NFL Nation Reporter Rich Cimini gives the low-down on the Bills' Week 14 opponent, the NY Jets. Finally the pair shared this week's picks for FanDuel's Hi-Lo game.

You make analytics only part of the equation, not the only decision.

Analytics = Gambling means you are not investing in your team effort.

“Analytics” = Paying Blackjack with a card counter. It’s not always right, but it’s correct more often than making a “gut” decision.

Business 101… you can’t improve what you don’t measure

Yeah it’s extremely difficult to compare which clubs are the most advanced… The clubs themselves do not want to release that fact. Analytics are a major piece of the NFL’s future. Can’t really rely on the report they got (only a 10 team response) when 4 of the top 5 teams are garbage lol.

However, having a way to turning everything into data, saving every game and every play into a database is absolutely key. I’m more than certain it’s happening. Knowing exactly what plays every team runs in exact situations, vs the defenses that were ran, and success rates…thats obviously incredibly valuable in crucial situations. It’s obviously different if you have Josh Allen in the driver’s seat, or Russell Wilson…😂. You could learn a coaches tendencies too if you knew what plays they’ve run all season. Again, I’m sure they’re doing it.

I should’ve switched and majored in statistics and/or analytics. I could’ve worked for the Bills and love my job every day.

Analytics only show odds. That’s it. They aren’t some magic sage which shows you what always works. They just show you what has the best chance of working. The bottom line is Analytics are correct on average more often than coach bob’s “gut”.

I wonder if anyone has tried GPTChat to call plays, lol

The models are based on historical data. Which metrics are most correlated with victory? Predicting which (controllable) features have highest impact (coefficient) on these metrics (y-value) could lead to better decisions. Maximize the probability for victory!
