McKinnon was covered. I see A LOT of people saying it was open. But it wasn’t. The defender was waiting for McKinnon to get that ball. He would’ve been short (IF he even maintained possession after being hit).

1. Mahomes could have ran and had McKinnon block.

2. Even if McKinnon doesn’t get the first, he makes it possible for a shorter field goal attempt or a possible 4th down attempt.

3. Mahomes could have thown the ball away instead of stepping _back into_ an already collapsed pocket and taking a sack.

All other scenarios are prefereable to what was done in that moment.

@Alvin I prefer obj Jr not to be beat so quickly. I agree maybe McKinnon could’ve stepped in to block.

I also wish they had run the ball or have a rb in the flat.

@onDoh Reacts Sure. I mean…clearly the play was botched from the begining and the loss didn’t come down to this one moment. My original point was that the loss wasn’t on Butker and, among a laundry list of mistakes, Mahomes (as great as he is) didn’t make the best decision on that play. Mahomes, 99 out of 100 times, in that situation, just takes off and picks up the 1st down himself. Why he did someting so uncharacteristic as _get back in to the pocket_ is beyond me. And what he was looking for, downfield, in the teeth of an 8-man coverage, under pressure, and with only needing to pick up 3 yards, is baffling, too.

I tell people that it just didn’t seem like they were “checked-in” mentally for the game. Too many mental errors, specifically having to do with seeminly not understanding where they are in situational football.
