Now, the Vikings can move forward with the new DC.

    Wolf Wang

Who is the new DC? They first gotta hire one lol

Joey Pesek

I think the team needs a 4-3 scheme. The best defenses like San Fran, Philly, and Dallas are all 4-3 defenses. I don’t think it’s a coincidence

    Puppethound

the Vikings defensive history is built around the 4-3, so moving away from that without the personnel to run that type of defense was smart. Anytime you make a scheme and have an impact player like Hunter and he is dropping back more than he is rushing, YOU aren’t a good coordinator, sorry, but it’s true. The interior of the D line is bad too, why some, or most, people think Tomlinson could hold O lineman off the LB, hence Hendricks’ bad season. Imagine adding one of those young DE and move Hunter back to a down rushing position on 95% of the plays.

    Baron Von Bielski

@Wolf Wangeah and one of the worst under zimmer with a 4-3.

    Baron Von Bielski

@peter karkoskathey aren’t switching to a 4-3. O’Connell himself said the one thing that won’t change is the scheme. Last two super bowl winners ran a 3-4.

    Daniel Simmons

@peter karkoska pretty sure Dalvin T is a FA

    Leland Jensen

    Philly runs the same scheme

Skol Vikings

Ben was spot on, playing that poorly on defense is unacceptable. No Minnesota Viking team should play soft finesse predictable awful weak defense. Bring back the purple people eaters asap. SKOL !!

The Truth

Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships.

    isac jama

    no cap

    Harvested Rust

Looking around the NFL today, it appears quarterbacks that are a threat to pass and run win championships.

    H-minus

@Harvested Rust Really? Look at the last 10 SB victories: Stafford, Brady, Mahomes, Brady, Foles, Brady, Manning, Brady, Wilson, Flacco. There are maybe 2 “running quarterbacks” in that group – maybe.

    The Truth

@Harvested Rust And the defense that can stop those QB’s will win.

5lueLight

We need a defense like the old Leber, Greenway, Allen, Kevin & Pat Williams defense

    Puppethound

Zimmer defenses were usually ranked pretty high until the last 2 seasons, hence why he was fired. Donatell’s defense was one of the worst in Viking’s team history.

    Jim

Literally nothing was special about Leber. He was just another body on the field.

    Enigma71559

@Jim A starting linebacker in the NFL for several seasons is NOT “just another body.”

    Jim

    @Enigma71559 Leber was very average.

    chucke42

Our linebackers totally disappeared this year under this system. Any defense where the linebackers literally turn their backs to the QB on the snap and run 20 yards before turning around takes them out of the running game defense, and with the soft CB play, the short pass defense also was hurt. How many times did we see crossing routes under our linebackers completed as they were so far back on defense. We need to get some athletic size on defense and get back to the Purple People Eater mentality. Our offense can wins games if the defense can show up and hit people like we used to.

American Gamer

THANK YOU, we shoulda lost him in November and we might’ve had a chance in playoffs

Liam

These guys acting all respectful and nice to Ed but are actually elated. Personally, I have no respect for someone who says I know the D has been bad but you’ll like what you see come playoffs… I get this is his job and his livelihood but fr how is running the same scheme gonna improve things in the playoffs Ed?. If he was just a bit more creative and called some different plays sometimes he might still have his job. He was just doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result….

David Wilkins

Had to happen. Nice and decisive. Ready for next season.

Hiram Lewis

Ben, exactly. Not that Mambi pambi defense that let Daniel Jones run and pass without any fear. Don’t want to see that anytime soon again

kibbeast

Paul is asking “why?” they fired Ed? Every Vikings fan knows that answer. Don’t lie.

Julie Leber

It had to happen. Time to straighten out the defense. Paul Allen doesn’t know why…wait…what? Has he not paid attention to the season? C’mon 🤦‍♀️

Sandy Hawkins

I think you appear more aggressive with the 4 3 defense but if you have the right players you can really shutdown the offense with the 3. 4

MrRyguy2112

There was no reason not to blitz more. Daniel was running more than both running backs, and blitzing or at least lining up more than 4 would have negated at least some of those yds. The secondary was getting burned some sure, but pressure on a QB helps that too.

Wally Tverstol

we all wanted to see Ed go especially after the Dallas game

H-minus

“The defense did not see enough improvements”. The defense allowed the same number of points per game as last year – 25.1. The offense regressed – only scoring 24.9 points per game, compared to 25.0 in 2021. All this 4-3 vs 3-4 talk is why the Vikings lose: use a defense that beats the specific opponent the team is about to face. Think about the 4-3/3-4 – all defensive linemen and linebackers. That wasn’t the personnel group making Daniel Jones look like Joe Montana – it was our secondary.

Enigma71559

I’m not so sure the problem wasn’t that the scheme just didn’t fit the players you had executing it. The best coaches make adjustments to their systems to best utilize the strengths of their personnel. I don’t think Ed did that. He was convinced his system would work no matter who the players were. Reminds me of Brad Childress.

Clint Pinkerton

You cant play defense like a scared little turtle curled back up into it’s shell when you’re a VIKING. YOU MUST PILLAGE! SKOL VIKINGS

Nomad

I wish this happened much sooner and we might be still in the playoffs this season but i’m so glad that it did finally happen. I can’t wait for next season. I am already going through Vikings football withdrawals. I think i may need rehab or some kind of Vikings anonymous meetings.

🖐😕Hello everyone, my name is Nomad and i’m a Vikingsaholic. You see it all started when i was a kid. I was exposed to the Vikings by my uncles and my grandparents who came from Minnesota. I was born in 82 with purple and gold in my blood already and everywhere i went, everyone in my family was addicted to Vikings football. I didn’t have a chance.

Everyone of their houses was filled with Vikings paraphernalia and everyone was always all hyped up on purple koolaid all the time and then by the time i was a teenager my addiction was out of control and i think i really hit my highest point in 98.

I was completely out of control that year and that’s when i realized i had a serious problem. But i never even tried to quit and i have just been dealing with the ups and downs of my addiction ever since.

I have now come to terms with it and knowing that i will never break the cycle and finally admitting it, has made my life much easier. Thanks for letting me share my story. I’m gonna go watch some old highlights or an old game or something now for a quick fix.
SKOL!!!

Wassergekuhlt

I really liked Easy Ed, I genuinely wish him the best. That being said, this should have happened during the Bye week.

IF you have the right NT’s (yep, more than one) and # of talented LB’s as well as a coach (per Belichick tree?) that knows the 3-4 inside and out, then 3-4 can work in MN or anywhere else. Yet, best to be versatile and multitalented enough to go 4-3 when you want/need to, is BEST WAY TO GO in the NFL IMO.
Why do so many argue for the limitations that bring lamebrained players & schemes that can only be “One trick ponies”, so untalented/uncoordinated to handle only one or the other (3-4 or 4-3)?
OL men are required to be smart as well as physical. Can’t the same be expected of your DL men (& LB’s, DB’s) as well?
