I was hoping for the “Washington Natives”. The logo picture is a strong Native American that was proposed by Walter Wetzel, a former Blackfeet tribal chairman and past president of the National Congress of American Indians. It was modeled after the likeness on the Buffalo nickel and is respectful (not like Chief Wahoo for Cleveland). Anyone from the DC area can relate to the tourist season here as well as the politicians who temporarily make a home here. We are Native to the area and we give homage to our proud Native American population.

Is it OK to recognize and celebrate a group that killed 1/3 of the native population over there, but it NOT OK to respectfully recognize, our American Native culture by calling the Washington team “Natives” and maintain the existing logo? Or, perhaps, the 49ers and the Buccaneers should consider the history of their team mascot and rename their team name?

I remember being pretty amazed when hearing that Washingtons basketball team narrowed it’s 3,000ish submitted name choices collected from a pool of 500,000ish fans to the five decidedly best of the bunch being the Sea Dogs, the Express, the Stallions, the Dragons, and of course the Wizards. Over 500,000 various thought processes coming up with over 3,000 different team name ideas… and those five were the absolute best. Clearly Washingtons pool of sports franchise name submitters experienced minimal (if any) turnover. My guess was the polling took place in Dallas.
