Vincent Jackson’s Updated Outlook Heading into 2013 Fantasy Playoffs

For fantasy owners of Vincent Jackson, Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills looked like an opportunity for a huge afternoon from the star wide receiver. The possibility of touchdowns and a huge yardage total were filling the minds of his owners with sunshine and happiness.

The problem throughout the week, of course, was that Jackson was listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, making his playing status unclear. Suddenly, dark storm clouds replaced the clear skies.

But fear not, all ye Jackson owners gearing up for the fantasy playoffs, for according to Ian Rapoport of, Jackson should be good to go:

#Bucs WR Vincent Jackson (hamstring) has told a close friend he’s a fast-healer. He’ll work out pre game, but does expect to play.

Feel free to think sunny thoughts once more—if Jackson is playing, he is absolutely a WR1 this week.

The Buffalo Bills allow 28.7 fantasy points to opposing wide receivers per week in standard scoring leagues, 30th in the NFL. They’ve given up 16 touchdowns to opposing wideouts—tied for 28th in the NFL with three other teams—and just allowed Roddy White to catch 10 passes for 143 yards, easily his best performance in a season marred by injury.

The matchup is one to look forward to, especially for a player that has notched double-digit fantasy points just once in his past six games. He’s had just one touchdown in that stretch.

Jackson went from being a locked-and-loaded WR1 early in the season to a low-end WR2 rather quickly, but his explosive ability over the top makes him a candidate for a huge afternoon against Buffalo.

Of course, it isn’t due to a reduced role in the offense that his production has waned—his 121 targets is seventh in the NFL this season. And to be fair, V-Jax has always been a boom-or-bust player for fantasy owners. He’s just as likely to give you 20 points as he is to disappear for a game or two and give you three points or less.

How many fantasy points will Jackson register versus Buffalo?

  • 21 or more

Such is the roller coaster you ride as a fantasy owner when you draft a big-play receiver who generally scores his touchdowns as a downfield target.

But this week, Jackson’s value should once again be at its apex.

Unless you are concerned that Jackson’s injury will flare up again—a small concern, for sure, considering you almost assuredly don’t have a contingency plan with V-Jax’s upside—there is no reason he should be on your bench this week.
