One question that I haven’t heard answered yet is how difficult it is to go from being a college tackle to being a tackle in the NFL. Obviously the quality of the opponent is faster and stronger and more skilled, but foundationally, is it much different?Tyler Smith played tackle in college so he’s apparently not learning a new position but going against players like AD is a whole new realm. I guess what I’m trying to get at, will Tyler just need to get better or is there a lot for him to learn as well?
Major difference from college to NFL picking up blitz etc… Not to mention he is theoretically on a island and has to cover Daks blind side I thought he was a reach in the draft but hopefully he does well… But I would go get Eric Fisher for free as a LT free agent
@Quinton Sanders Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. Like you said the blitzes and stunts will be totally different. Maybe the guy will surprise us and be an unrefined natural like Dak was but I’m kind of doubting it. I’m with you that they need to get veteran help. If nothing else than as insurance policy if Tyler can’t handle it. Because obviously there is no one behind him that can do the job even close to compentently so I think it’s a no brainer that they have to bring in a vet.

Plenty of guys have proven you don’t have to be a first round pick to be very successful player in the NFL…plenty of first round picks have not worked out…Ball didn’t get to practice last yr this is basically his rookie year….Larry Allen got shoved around and embarrassed his first yr or 2….Tyron has be beat several times over the years….

The failure with left tackle is two fold. They underestimated the amount of time they had with Tyron and they are taking too long to develop drafted talent. The personnel policy is draft and develop and Philbin is taking too long to show progress. A mediocre stop gap doesn’t really fix the problem so we will need to burn up a 2nd or a third round pick for a variable solution if Tyler Smith is not ready.

You can’t use what Mcarthy said about Tyler smith vs McGovern as what is really happening at left guard. He is always shifty with his words and would never say that about the #1 draft pick unless it was a diversion. Just watch the tape and see how Tyler Smith was man handling people.

Y’all be wack! We could of drafted Cross and watch Dee Williams push him all over the place! Plus I think Smith was better than McGovern! Put him at tackle next to Forniak and roll with it! Or put Ball/Waletzko at tackle and Smith at guard!
Hearing what this day is like from a players perspective is really fascinating. The casual fan doesn’t really know what it’s like to be in the NFL and not be a superstar, it’s a tough road to make it!
