Study: Concussions lower in higher elevations

A report published Tuesday in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy looked at concussions from the first 16 weeks of the 2012 and 2013 NFL seasons, and found that the number of reported concussions was 32 percent lower in games played at higher elevations.

At higher elevations, pressure and fluid volume within the head naturally increases, which the study suggests limits “sloshing,” or movement of the brain, which can cause concussions.

The results indicated a relationship between incidents of concussions and field elevation, but noted more investigation is necessary to confirm that connection and understand why it exists.
