That was a great win accomplished in a great season. A lot of things were done that year for the 1st time ever that year by the Steelers.
1. Beat the Cowboys in the previous game for first time since the 1980s
2. Beat undefeated New England for 1st time in many years
3. Beat the DEFENDING Superbowl champions
4. Beat undefeated Philadelphia 27-3 the next week to be the 1st team ever to beat consecutive undefeated teams that were at least 6-0 at that stage of the season.
5. Steelers win 15 regular season games for 1st time ever.
6. Ben is 1st NFL rookie to go undefeated in 14 NFL starts. I think he started in the 3rd game of the year.
7. The 2004 team was the foundation of the 2005 Superbowl team.
2004 was a very special season for many reasons that year. Almost magical. I believe the Steelers absolutely peaked at their best when they beat New England and Philadelphia in consecutive weeks. They peaked too early that year and couldn’t sustain it. After Philadelphia, it seemed to me as the season progressed, they were getting weaker because some of the games against much inferior teams were a struggle to win. The NY Giant game comes to mind at the end of the year as 1 example.
It was truly a great season that year.
