CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith was fined an undisclosed amount for calling umpire Dan Ferrell “garbage” the day after a loss two weeks ago to the Arizona Cardinals, a league source told ESPN.com.
Smith claimed Ferrell missed at least one pass interference call and refused to give him the proper spot late in the third quarter of the Oct. 6 game in Glendale, Ariz.
“To be honest, I make enough money where if Roger [Goodell] wants to fine me, he can,” Smith said at the time, referring to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “I really think that referee probably was the sorriest referee I have ever met.”
Smith would not comment earlier in the week on whether he had been fined.
