Despite the Cleveland Browns showing interest, Gary Kubiak is unlikely to become the club’s offensive coordinator, a source tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

After ending a lengthy search for a head coach by hiring Mike Pettine from the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, the Browns are in the process of assembling a staff under the former defensive coordinator.

Kubiak, 52, was fired as coach of the Houston Texans in early December in the midst of his eighth season. He posted a 61-64 record with the team.

He has an offensive background as a coach, serving as offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos for 11 seasons. He also was quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1994, helping Hall of Famer and current ESPN analyst Steve Young to one of his best seasons, and served as John Elway‘s backup during much of his nine seasons as a player with the Broncos.
