Sean Payton Opening Remarks from Retirement Press Conference | New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton's opening remarks from his retirement press conference as he steps down as the winningest head coach in New Orleans Saints history.

In a seismic decision, Sean Payton, the winningest coach in New Orleans Saints history, stepped down Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Payton, who guided the New Orleans Saints to heights the franchise never had experienced before he became head coach in 2006, retired 16 days after the Saints' regular-season finale, with the team failing to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016 after winning four consecutive NFC South Division titles.

With a 152-89 regular-season record and nine playoff game victories in 17 tries, including Super Bowl XLIV in 2009, Payton completed 15 seasons as Saints coach.

Under Payton, New Orleans won seven NFC South Division titles including the four straight, a feat unmatched by any other team in the division, and posted nine 10-win seasons. Before he was hired, the Saints totaled five 10-win seasons in 39 years.

But his impact immediately was felt in New Orleans.

The Saints won the division and advanced to the NFC Championship Game in his first season – the first of three appearances in the NFC Championship Game, the only three in franchise history – and emerged as an NFL power.

The franchise also became a desired destination for unrestricted free agents (quarterback Drew Brees and linebacker Demario Davis top the list) due to Payton's vision early on and then later because of its on-field success and player-friendly amenities. And throughout the development of the program under Payton, the coach smoothly adapted to the times, whether that meant social media engagement to offer humorously pointed commentary, or battle rapping to take on a rookie player during training camp.

But perhaps just as much, the confidence and swagger Payton provided the team also leaked into the city in which his teams played. New Orleans morphed from underdog to Super Bowl contender during Payton's era and was considered the latter more than the former in the majority of his seasons, in large part due to the record-breaking offenses he crafted that were led by Brees.

There’s not enough words to say how much you’ve meant to the Saints, THANK-YOU doesn’t seem to be enough, but that’s all I have. You , Drew, and Michael Thomas coming when y’all did was a God send. My husband watched the Saints every since they became a team in ’67, one of the highlights was when y’all won the Superbowl. That was actually written in his obituary. He passed away Christmas day 2010, the last Christmas present I got from him in 2009 was an NFL Drew jersey that I have in my closet with the tags still on it. I treasure that and the memories we shared every Sunday or whenever y’all played. I loved watching him, watching y’all! So again, THANK-YOU, and enjoy your family, until your next adventure, 💞

I was just 13, in the 8th grade when he became our coach. It was only a few months after Katrina and I was adjusting to life in Baton Rouge and trying to make friends at a new school. I’ll be 30 next month and as I think about everything that has happened in my life since then, it blows my mind to realize that he has been our coach the whole time, through all of it. I remember when he was viewed as the young, bright, up and coming coach and now here he is retiring. It’s a strange feeling for something that has been such a constant since adolescence to change, but I understand and I wish him the best moving foward. Thanks for everything Coach, it really meant a lot to us.

I experienced that same feeling. Sometimes the change results in something being worse

I was five when the Brees Payton era started. That 2006 season my dad and I drafted Brees in our fantasy league. I was hooked to the saints and became a die hard. This is the end to the era and essentially my childhood. Congrats Payton you deserve it.

Nado Slimm

Him and Drew were basically my childhood. I’m 26 now and I really shed a tear because this just reminds me of how fast time flies. Cherish the present because you can’t get those moments back. Thank you for the memories coach! Who Dat Nation is forever grateful. ⚜

Kevin Hooter

On behalf of everyone from Louisiana: Thank you so much. Good luck on all future endeavors. The on-side kick in the super bowl is the greatest coaching decision I’ve ever seen.

Love you Sean you and Brees will always be saints I promise ❤ everywhere you go the saints and saints fans we are with you. I spent countless hours fighting on sports networks on the phone for football fans fighting for you and Drew because Roger Goodell was giving the saints hell because of that outright grap when they accuse the Saints of bounty hunting. You don’t know this but it’s true! It took hours hanging on the phone just to be heard. So I have been proud of that knowing within myself I did my part in helping my coach. Because it got back to Paul tagliabue whatever his name is. Thank You Coach Payton I love 💘 you and I appreciate you highly. I wish you all the best and God bless you as you have blessed us here in Louisiana. The saints and our fans stole something from you and we will not give it back. That is we stole your heart ❤ hugs and kisses Coach Payton 😘 now you are a saints fan. P.s. I brought the road to the Super Bowl I hope you don’t mind it’s my forever tribute to you and Drew. It brings all of our saints back including Will Smith and Tom Benson. Much love 💘 ❤ 💗 💕 Coach Payton you are truly a wonderful man. My daughter and I was in our apartment in Lake Charles when hurricane Laura slammed us. Her winds got up to 300mph from 419am to 449am. I thought about you and Drew even through hurricane Laura. Because It reminded me of how hurricane Katrina brought you and Drew to us. I thought, I know our Coach will be there ready with love and hugs 🤗 thanks for everything you have been to this state Coach Payton.

Raquan Davis
