NEW YORK — New York City Police commissioner Ray Kelly said he expects the Super Bowl to be a safe event this February, and that New York and New Jersey law enforcement authorities have not received any security threats to the event.

“There’s a lot of exchange of information,” Kelly said. “No threats against the Super Bowl, no indication that there should be any major issue with the Super Bowl.

“It is in fact a big important football game, but there are about 20 of them in that stadium. We feel pretty confident, but we’re working with federal officials and NJ officials as well.”

The Super Bowl will take place Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with events leading up to the game on both sides of the Hudson River.

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said he thinks the game is in good hands.

“This is something (Kelly) does virtually every day,” said Johnson, who is a co-chair of the Host Committee. “We just had the marathon, he just did the Veteran’s Day parade.

“New York and New Jersey are good, we’re really excellent at this, and we have all the federal agencies, so I imagine that everybody is going to feel pretty safe.”

Kelly and Johnson were at the Bowery Mission in Manhattan to hand out coats to people in need. Afterwards, Kelly had a press conference during which he said planning for this season’s Super Bowl started before the last Super Bowl, and that there have been weekly security meetings to plan for the event for some time now.

“I don’t see it as a super challenge,” Kelly said. “It’s a major event, we’re very experienced in handling major events.”
