Iād love to see how this works. Why are the men around Mike and Merrill doing exactly? I can tell that they are giving them immediate player info but how does that work? Then the guy behind Mike usually gives a packet of info at what seems to be a very precise time
I believe they gentleman behind Mike that hands Merrill the papers is handing him advertising reads. So after a touchdown, sack, field goal etc. you here him say this “xxx” is brought to you buy “Insert sponsor here”.
The spotter, with the binoculars, works with position diagrams for the offense and defense of each team. Using the two appropriate charts, he points to the name(s) that Merrill needs in order to make the call. Teamwork is crucial! The spotter needs to anticipate what Merrill will say next, sometimes directly from Merrill. (e.g. at 2:10) The way these two work, Merrill tracks the snap and calls the ball carrier or if the QB drops to pass. On a run, the spotter will point out the tackler; on a pass, he will point to the receiver and simultaneously to the defender. He also can “suggest” names to mention, such as pointing out a key blocker, that Merrill can choose (or not) to mention. If Merrill has made a mistake, the spotter will wave for his attention or that of the producer. (I worked as a spotter and statistician at the University of Maryland as a student.)
