The Miami Dolphins have placed Jonathan Martin, who has been away from the team for several weeks in the midst of a bullying scandal involving teammate Richie Incognito, on the non-football injury list.

By placing Martin on the non-football injury list, the second-year offensive lineman is ineligible to play again this season and no longer counts toward the Dolphins’ 53-man roster.

The Dolphins signed safety D.J. Campbell, who was previously on both the active roster and practice squad, with the open spot created by Martin.

From a financial standpoint, the Dolphins have the flexibility to choose how much of Martin’s base salary he will receive for the rest of the season. The 24-year old signed a four-year rookie contract that includes a base salary of $607,466 for the 2013 season, and the Dolphins can choose to pay as little as none or the balance of his base salary for the remaining portion of the season.

The Dolphins recently agreed with Incognito to prolong the suspension with pay that he received in the wake of the allegations of bullying, sources confirmed to ESPN. The agreement was reached on Nov. 21, the day Incognito’s grievance hearing was scheduled to be conducted with the NFL, according to ESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

Incognito now faces a maximum suspension of six games, but just two games without pay, according to sources.

Independent arbitrator Ted Wells, who has previously met with several members of the Dolphins organization, continues his investigation into the matter.
