Lions finish 9-8: 2022 season wrap-up & offseason preview | Twentyman in the Huddle Episode 34

On this week’s episode of Twentyman in the Huddle presented by Microsoft, Tim Twentyman and producer PJ Clark wrap up the 2022 season as the Detroit Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers in Week 18 to end the year with a 9-8 record. With the Seahawks defeating the Rams, the Lions’ season ended there, but the win knocked the Packers out of the playoffs and gave Detroit a winning year-end record for the first time since 2017. The two discuss the Week 18 win before diving into key takeaways from Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes’ season-end press conferences earlier this week. Tim and PJ talk through the performances of Detroit’s 2022 rookie class, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson interviewing for head coaching jobs and Jared Goff setting himself up to be the Lions’ quarterback for years into the future. They wrap things up with a bit of an offseason preview, detailing which positions and players could target with draft picks and cap space in Brad Holmes’ third player-acquisition cycle.

Highlights include:
– 0:00-0:25: Podcast introduction
– 0:26-3:29: Recapping the Lions’ Week 18 win in Green Bay
– 3:30-5:39: What was Dan Campbell most proud of from this season?
– 5:40-9:49: Ben Johnson set to interview for three head coaching positions
– 9:50-15:39: Adding Aidan Hutchinson, 2022 draft class to the Lions’ talented core
– 15:40-21:40: Does Brad Holmes think Goff is Lions’ quarterback in 2023?
– 21:41-27:10: Which positions need upgrades as Detroit enters the offseason?
– 27:11-32:56: How aggressive with the Lions be in free agency this year?
– 32:57-33:56: What’s in store for the podcast this offseason?

Great season, bring as many guys as we can back and run it back!

Lions rule. Next step: make quality picks in the draft.

Lions will be good they have to start the season off better and keep Jamal Williams , get that defense right

Imagine if Levi can come in next season and start to contribute. A lot of people had him as their top DT in the 2021 Draft.

    stephen Reid

No no no Levi is done back injures are carrer enders the amicable thing to do with him is an injury settlement or release and let him try elsewhere not labeling him a bust but I have 0 faith in anything from him keep him on practice squad as back up but even that is taking a potential spot for someone else

    Solo Mo

@stephen Reid you don’t know anything until the season start back up

    Lionize

@Solo Mo True but when Coach was asked about the surgery’s success he seemed grim and was non committal. I wouldn’t count on Levi ever playing football again. If he does come back great! But Dan didn’t give any optimism.

This is one of my favorite lions teams. Such a wild ride this season that started with the “same Ole lions” and finished the season as the brand new lions. Too bad we didn’t make the playoffs cause No one wanted to play us in the playoffs. But to finish 8-2 was after 1-6 start was outstanding. Job well done

Very satisfying season… congrats to the Detroit Lions 🦁…

DC, Brad and Shiela finally flipped the script killed the SoL and gave birth to One Pride. It’s only going to get better. I don’t see DC and the staff losing consistence. DC hit the media the week before the Jaguars game and lost focus. I think he learned from that.

Student Of The Options Game

Jeff Risdon mentioned that Levi won’t be the same due to his back injury. It’s not good …

The Lions Den

Ben Johnson may be a great offensive coordinator, but he might be the best head coach. Its not always x’s and o’s . The head coach is all about personality, relationships with players and ownership, and motivation. That’s why Dan Campbell is so good

Alice Williams

My only wish is we bring back Jamal Williams, absolutely love that guy

    Righteous Isthelord

I think the deal will be made. He is a leader of the new culture on and off the field. He’s a key piece and wants to stay. They will make that deal work. I’m confident man.

Under the circumstances dont matter the team theres only 32 of them when you get the offer you take it period end of story

Good show guys!👍

One Pride, you just wait until Goff and Jamo get their timing down, you think we’re exciting now?! 🤣 And indeed, Chark solidified his place with this team and finally became family. There isn’t a man in that locekr room that wants to leave this team, we’re seeing the beginnings of a true dynasty.

Daniel's Window

Cominsky isn’t going anywhere, he’s here for the long haul as is most of this team. They all see and feel a Bowl Ring coming.

Matt Play

Why did he say “now that Jamaal is leaving” at 20:45 ? I know he’s a free agent but I think he wants to be back and we want to keep him…

To Trade Stafford to the Rams got us where we are. Imagine not having that #6 extra pick, turned out to be a great trade I think. Last year LA having the 32 pick was a worse case scenario, this year made up for it. MYSELF, with picks 6 and 18, and maybe even some talent to trade….I trust this guy. I’m betting he trades out of pick 6 and takes a premiere CB and an extra pick in the top 40.This defensive line we are building given a superior LB and a superior CB could double the number of sacks and turnovers. The big thing is playing your cards close to your chest …and recognizing what you have. IF they get an extra earlier pick, so 5 in the first and second, you get (CB & LB), and one of the two best dual threat RB (think Kamara – New Orleans), A DL, A GUARD, and “another DB -maybe a SAFETY. Round 5-1, and 6-2 (I’ll leave to Brad again) maybe a QB like Brock Purdy or Zappe a mid rounder like NE took last year. WE don’t have a good enough Backup and haven’t for years now

Doug Michael Roossien

Campbell and Holmes have a few months to read through all of our comments lol …😁 so it’s our job as great Lion fans to hep😛 GO LIONS!!

Michael Fitzpatrick

The lions were scrutinized for keeping so many players on a 3 and 13 and 1 team and with a few draft picks they turned it around. Our third year and those holes that need to be fixed are so minimal. Biggest improvement I saw this year is how decker is playing meaner and how mean sewell is. LOVE IT.
now we need that on the defensive line. In the 3 big blow outs we had we were dominated in the trench

J R

This was such a fun season as a fan. They started 1-6 and I was resigned to the fact that we would have a stinker of a season, but at least they’d have 2 Top 5 Number 1’s. Then all of a sudden, this team flipped a switch, and the next thing we know they go 8-2. No more 2 top 5 picks, now we’re fighting for the playoffs! Absolutely insane turnaround by these guys. Super excited for the draft and next year. In Dan we trust. In Brad we trust. VERY EXCITING TIMES FOR THE DETROIT LIONS!

Lucas Tunningley

I think if swift leaves.. which I don’t want him to, Justin Jackson would do well. Everytime he was in, he made plays
