Kevin O’Connell Talks About Kellen Mond’s Big Game, Team’s Overall Performance and More – FANTASY FOOTBALL FAN SITE
Da Truth

I Believe in Mond and Ty Chandler! 🔥

    Jesse Montgomery

Monday will make a good qb give him a year or two to work on his accuracy and awareness and I wouldn’t mind him taking over the offense

    Benjamin

    Yoi speak “da truth”

    R I

He’ll be even better on Tuesday! 😉

    BaronVonBielski

Mond had one okay showing against 3rd and 4th stringers throwing to wide open receivers and still missing badly sometimes. You people hype up young QBs to a ridiculous amount, when he still hasn’t showed enough to be considered even a halfway decent backup

Cristhian Espinosa

Pre Season Notes:

Mond should be QB2. He looked good and he actually looked like a QB for the future, worth development

DL looks amazing, the only thing they did wrong was leaving open gaps and not holding the QB in the pocket

OL looks better than last year’s.

Finally, rookies looked great and the offense looked fueled!

    Cristhian Espinosa

@Not Surge I didn’t say qb1 prospect. But the development is worth it

    robbk1

Absolutely! Develop him, and as a bubble NFL starter-level QB, you can trade him off at a bit over his true value to a team that loses its #1 for the season. Then, you can get a not-quite as-good back-up to replace him, and the remainder of the trade assets you receive back you can use to help fill other holes in the lineup. THAT’S one way that winning teams continue to keep strong lineups even when getting relatively low draft choices for several consecutive years.

    Tom

@Not Surge May I ask what your bona fides are to make a sweeping prediction like that after ONE lousy PS game with 2nd and 3rd string OL and receivers? At what level and how many years have you been coaching to add credibility to such a certain prediction? Should we all know and revere your name? (Personally I played foortball in HS 1960-1963 and I’ve only watch the Vikings since 1961, so I’ll bow to your superior experience, skill, and knowledge.)

    Ross Sivertson

Mond looked good but we need to settle down just a little as it started to take place when the Raiders put 2nd 3rd 4th stringers in.

Still I was expecting a loss because I thought the QB play would be terrible. We still lost but Mond played far better then I thought he would.

    Mannion was of course Mannion.

    Trey Pater

    Way to much costly penalties

NamelessViking

We already know how our starters play but it’s nice to see solid depth from the backups and rookies. Yes they caused penalties but now they know better. Getting a flag during practice never set in on any player most of the time it’s during the game they actually start taking care of those penalties.

    Jesse Montgomery

They still need to learn more disciple but it’s the preseason this is the time they get to learn what they can do and cannot do hopefully they learn from this and clean it up before they get to the regular season

NillaWafers89

The RB room is deep. I like Mattison but it might be time to let these younger guys get more play time. Nwangwu and Chandler looked damn good.

    Noah Edington

No offense to him but I feel as though mattison’s vision/explosiveness is questionable compared to the other backs on the team

    Rob E

@HighlightRoad I agree. I think KO will keep Cook much fresher and run him away from contact, and reduce his snap count. Even our O Line is better and he should have a much better time running behind Darrisaw, Ezra and Ingram.
I could easily see Cook having a 30% reduction in snaps and 20% increase in production.

    HighlightRoad

@Rob E totally agree, especially with running cook away from pressure, we seen with zimmer cook was always ran right into truck walls in the middle, but with KO we have already seen a lot of outside runs in the preseason if we ran it, more productive runs because of it too

    Rob E

@HighlightRoad Cheers. Another thing that the Mattison for RB2 camp seem to forget is that OConnell won the SB despite his RB1 being out for the whole regular season. If he doesn’t need his RB1 to win the SB, why would he keep a slow RB2 as a back up?

    6ftMouse

Considering it’s AM last year with us we should probably use him as much as possible.

Ryan Singh

Mond starting against the niners for sure!!

    Jesse Montgomery

@NamelessViking I think the problem with the playoffs is it is a night game and I’m not sure what it is but the vikings are trash at night games which is bad because if we do make it to the superbowl it will always be a night game

    Daniel Trevino

@Jarrad Bruessel I believe every team plays their starters every game in the playoffs. 😂

    Jarrad Bruessel

@NamelessViking lmfao my bad damn auto correct

    Jarrad Bruessel

    @Jesse Montgomery damn autocorrect

    Jarrad Bruessel

    @Daniel Trevino damn auto correct

Skunk’d fishing

Ty chandler is gunna be a monster, i was shocked with mond but in a good way

    Dynamic Dave

    10 yards per carry!!

EB0203

Glad to have football back! Good first game, a lot of promising performances. Skol!

    Rob E

I feel pretty good about my Chandler, Ingram and Dantzler predictions right now! I haven’t heard any chatter, but Vederian Lowe was extremely solid at LT in the 4th quarter too. I would not be surprised to see him move up to the 2nds, and Udoh drop to the 3rds next week.

    EB0203

@Rob E You gotta remind me what your specific predictions were! Dantzler will be CB1, Ingram start at RG by the bye (although after tonight i’m thinking that timeline could be moved up to Game 1), and Chandler will make the 53?

    Rob E

@EB0203 Close enough. I thought Dantzler would easily beat out Booth (and be CB1/2 with P2).
Ingram would start as soon as he was ready (the bye at latest) and could end up being the best OG in the draft. I also predicted he would make some pancake tackles today (✅) and that Ty Chandler could be RB2 by week 1 (and might get 100 yards today (✅).
I was suggesting months ago that we should try trading Mattison (for anything), because he was just taking opportunities away from Kene and Ty. Today we saw that they can easily share the load with Cook. I’d suggest Koback will be a fine emergency back up for the practice squad.
We saw AJ Rose make some nice plays for the Rams after the Vikes waived him. Imo – Mattison is the 4th best RB on our roster, and I’m hoping we use that roster spot to keep an extra WR like Trishton or Wilson on the 53. Especially with the move towards a passing offence.

Our new FO have no allegiance to Mattison, or Bisi, or Boyd, or Oli. I think some Vikes fans are still thinking like the old regime.

Why would Kwesi draft Chandler if he was happy with Mattison and Kene?
Why would he draft Vederian Lowe if he was happy with Brandel and Oli?

Kwesi has told us all along that he makes intentional decisions, and has specific ideas about value. We have seen it play out in every move. Bargaining down P2 and Pierce. He is doing it right now with Suh. I bet if Suh would accept $4m he’d be signed tomorrow. It sounds like Suh is expecting $8-9, and whereas Kwesi compares that value to Phillips at $6m, and Watts at $1m – and probably see’s Suh somewhere in between them.
    Skol!

Josh Tibbetts

Best I’ve ever felt after any Vikings loss. Tundra native. 60 year fan.

    Rex Rogers

    SKOL!!

    Dynamic Dave

Seriously.. glad that oconnell showed he can call plays.. and defense looked good at times.. and running backs chandler and nwongu showed big flashes!

    Jed Clampett

Garrett Bradbury started 45 of the 45 games he was eligible for in his first three seasons, and also was in on nearly 100% of the offensive plays! That would not have happened if he was not good. Also people take for granted how important he is to the running game! It might be true that he is lacking some pass blocking technique, but we need to give him a chance under the new regime. Also, even the idiot media admits there are very few outstanding centers available in the NFL right now. Let’s be winners and be smart with our comments. I tell you what Y O U are not better than Bradbury. (Let’s not forget that he has already caught two passes, including one for a first down!)

    petewiltfang

That’s awesome being a 60 year fan! I myself am a 68 year old man who has been a fan since their first game in 1961! Even though I was born and raised in Michigan I’ve been hooked on the Vikings and have been win, lose, or tie! My 42 year old son is just as much a fan as I am.

Tom

Kellen Mond: Essentially a rook, first game in an NFL game. Sean Mannion: 6 year stats, 67/110, 1TD, 3INT. Mond: Nice start, shows promise, Mannion: Laughs all the way to the bank. Winner: Mond, hands down.

    Hue Yang

Kirky will say he needs his secondary coach!👍🤣

    Jesse Montgomery

@Hue Yang than just make Mannion a assistant qb coach for kirk so we can have an actual back up instead of going oh well I guess we just lose until kirk gets back

    Jed Clampett

Experience is valuable. Fans jump on the players of the past way to quickly.

    Tom

@Jed Clampett Mannion had 67/110 passing total in 6 years. His highest QBR over the las t 5 years is 33.5. That means 99.9% of his experience was holding the clip board. Tell me how valuable that was.

    Zach

    I’ll nu

Skoldier Soup

Id say we got a good look at a lot of guys. Not worried about win or loss. Not the point of this game. Mond did have some nice flashes there. Keep it up. SKOL

Christoph

I did not expect them to win, but they played a decent game and it is obvious, that there is potential in Kellen Mond, while Sean Mannion was somewhat lost out there.
Is there room for improvement? Yes of course and I am confident that we have a head coach who recognizes this and really works on this with the team.

    D T

I don’t think Mannion looked lost, he just can’t make the throws. He does not even look like he is in shape. He is KOC 2.0, IMO.

The knock on Mond is that he has been scary slow in his progressions during practice, but it didn’t look that way today. Granted everything was base defensive looks. But he’s accurate and displayed a nice touch.

If they keep 3 QBs I don’t understand why they would keep Mannion, he cannot physically handle the position.

Mr. Sasshole

Was encouraged by what I saw from Mond today. He’s really struggled with the mental processing aspect of quarterback in training camp. No surprise since his actual rookie year was a wash due to a head coach that was more interested in settling scores than doing what was right for the team. But Mond showed some promise today. He hung in the pocket a few times while keeping his eyes downfield, he made some nice reads and a few difficult throws for nice completions. He’s got a long way to go, but I was very encouraged by what I saw out of him today. We’re all rooting for you, Kellen.

    Tom

If you’re a long time fan of the team, maybe you remember Tarkenton and his famous scrambles. Mond was very very similar because unlike most modern QBs like Jackson, even RGIII, cam, etc, he scrambled and looked for an open receiver instead of just trying to run for yards. I haven’t seen that since Tark retired, and I thought it was GREAT!

D Lindstrom

People forget. That’s pretty much the first time Mond got real game experience since we drafted him. He was pretty good. If he completed that pass after that scramble fans would be going wild right now.

    Jed Clampett

Yes, that’s a problem (that fans would be going wild after one completion by a rookie QB in a meanless exhibition game!).

    Ben Blevins

Good point. Mike really really held him back, he’s still a rookie in my books

    #When Lambo

@Jed Clampett Yeah bc it’s a highlight of what the future could be. It would be a wild moment to see any first round QB do good.

Art Vandelay

So good to finally have a head coach that can actually develop young talent, and puts some emphasis on it

    Jed Clampett

That is probably true, but it’s early yet.

Lon Jacobs

Yes, mond looked great after stumbling a bit, I think he did better than manion. Of course, plenty learning and coaching opportunities. Overall impressed with new younger guys. O line And D line looked great.

    Tom

He trotted on the field for his fist extended play after a stolen year last year. I attribute those first few stumbles to first time jitters. He certainly calmed down as time want on.

Clinton Reisig

Good stuff, really. Great to know we got depth in many positions

Ryan Holmes

I don’t remember Zim frequently speaking about players on a first name basis.

Those are the little things that’ll go a long way in the locker room.

NiklePikle

That looked like a normal starter game… Usual expectations…. I know it’s preseason. But can’t wait to see the starters if play calling stays this way. Chandler was great. Mond surprised me.

Patrick's Music

Glad I can listen to this coach. Appreciate the Injury updates

Nick Pallitto

I was very happy to see Mond given the opportunity to play, he looked good. It was sad to see under Zimmer he didn’t have anything good to say good about him.
