Ken Dorsey: “Making Sure We Are Playing Smart Not Conservative” | Buffalo Bills

Bills Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey spoke to the media on Monday following the Bills Wild Card Playoff win over the Miami Dolphins 34-31. Topics included: Learning from mistakes, trying to limit Josh for his safety while also letting him use his talent as a QB, how Josh has grown as a QB and learns from his mistakes while still being confident, having multiple weapons on offense at the Wide Receiver position and how that takes pressure off of Stefon Diggs, and playing against the Bengals defense for technically the first time this season.

It’s easy as a fan to judge. But everyone can see we’re not finding rhythm. To find rhythm you need patience. Going for big plays too often kills a quarterbacks confidence. You’re asking him to do things that aren’t possible. Yes, he makes big throws more than anyone in the NFL but he also needs to find the groove early on. Get a few 10-15 play drives together early in the game. Pass run pass (QB option). Run run pass (QB option). Take small chunk plays. Beasley and Shakir are extremely effective for finding rhythm. Allen can get them the ball before he feels the pressure. There’s no grey area if the pocket collapses. Randomly throw a long ball. When you’re in the groove light them up down field!

@Amuuusing the bills are number two in DVOA offense this year that hasn’t happened to buffalo since they were number 1 in 1990. Big plays is what separates the best qbs from the average ones. Miami blitzed 53% of the time playing single high or zero coverage 70% of the time. When that happens, you should throw to your wide receivers down the field being covered by just one guy. Josh did that and if not for a shakiir drop this game would have been a boar race. No one would be complaining then.

    Amuuusing

@The tree true, but to stay cool and calm in the moment, and maintain consistent control, slants, close outs and digs, checks, snags, stops, etc. are necessary. Also the run game, but yea if Shakir catches that then it’s prob a 400 yard game 4 td

    MICHAEL STURDEVANT

Nonsense. They need quicker releases, period. Josh is hanging way too long in the pocket looking for these long vertical routes to develop.

    Amuuusing

    @MICHAEL STURDEVANT yep

    The tree

@MICHAEL STURDEVANT good that’s what josh does the best. For some reason bills fans want to turn Josh Allen in the Kirk cousins. I have no idea why.

Josh isn’t a rookie anymore but I definitely don’t think he’s a veteran though….. I honestly think the turnovers come from using Josh as the easy button…. cooks been cooking so give the young buck some more carries

Daniel Hughson

Average depth of target in the 4th quarter was 26 yards. The Greatest Show on Turf couldn’t compete with those numbers. Good teams are explosive, GREAT teams can work the short game and the long game simultaneously.

That’s why you see KC run screens, RPOs, slants, option routes, motion men. It takes the pressure off of the QB and makes it so an entire drive doesn’t have to come down to whether or not we caught a 50 yard pass. It seems like we are a paper tiger right now. Uncontested, and we will run down the field 10/10 times. But when we get knocked off of schedule, we flounder.

    Brick N Motor

Hey save the flounder comments for the dolphins. 😂

Jason Stroude

Smart not conservative makes me think Josh’s decision making is trying to be too aggressive…nothing was conservative especially when the RBs had zero passing targets

    Ned Ryerson

“Smart not conservative”… Is that the montra? Whose responsibility is the “smart” parr?

    ArkOmen1

@Ned Ryerson  Yeah that’s what I said here. That was my comment. This whole “smart not conservative” mantra is such a stupid bass ackward nonsensical confusing oxymoronic load of double speak. I’m bout done

    Jonathan Pielmeier

    @ArkOmen1 bye then!!

Jesus

I’m good with Ken Dorsey, offense needs to make better decisions and execute. Josh needs to make better decisions. If the players and offense plays smart, no mistakes, defense follow the Ravens blue print the Bills will be okay. Let’s see what happens on Sunday. 👍

Bill Barone

It seems to me when we spread out with 5 wide, that’s when we moved the ball, just like last year

ℌ𝔄ℜ𝔇 𝔚ℌ𝒾𝔗𝔈

Let’s not whip the ball halfway down the field when there is triple coverage

Joseph Hoffman

Only thing that keeps bothering me is not taking the easy FG in the red zone on 4th down. I love being aggressive, but take the points when you can. Don’t force it.

    Geoffrey Ford

Been saying that all season. Really hurt us in the Vikings game. I was screaming at the TV “TAKE THE POINTS!”

    apb1969

    @Geoffrey Ford me too.

    Kool Kitties

Especially in the first quarter I don’t understand why you would go for it on fourth down in the first quarter just take the damn three points you will need those points at the end of the game

    1snaj

    F the field goal

    Kevin Walter

Ya and u wanna be the opposite of aggressive when ur up 2 scores.u wanna eliminate any risky plays that have potential for turnovers.that what kept the dolphins and score so close

drew

Someone needs to instill in Allen’s head that it ok to throw the ball away other than forcing it, bills fan here go bills

    Brett Patton

Or take the sack instead of fumbling it. The man got sacked seven times Sunday. Obviously, we have some offensive line problems.

Cruise Food and More!

This is the first time the media has been Aggro with Ken and I love it! We need to run they all saw it!

Israel Valencia

Matt Stafford Had 17 interceptions last season and the LA Rams won the Superbowl, we still Billieve, we have confidence

    Joe Schmoe

And no one muttered a word of negativity against him. Sports media is trash. Don’t pay any attention

Benji Mann

Win or lose against Cincy Im proud of this team. So much progress has been made. They are learning! They have the talent, so the more they learn the better they get. They are definitely a Superbowl winning team, they just have to iron out the small details.

Its a complicated game! Its not as simple as “just keep running the ball with so-and-so”. The man said it. You cant be predictable!

    Joe Schmoe

No there is no losing. I’ve waited 2 decades for this damn it

    Show Stopper

Spoken like a true loser! Someone once said “you show me somebody who’s okay with losing and I’ll show you a loser”. How many more years are they gonna be “learning”? Bengals got there in two years after they go Burrow. Dorsey is trash and McDermott doesn’t time manage well in the playoffs.

Michal Tezner

We have Josh, that is it! GO BILLS

RICHOFFGAME

I totally believe in Josh how much of an influence does Dorsey really think he has over Josh is ❤What I question Josh usually seems as though he’s waiting for the play to break down to become who he is honestly I like Dorsey but bro needs to utilize our running backs

MrAKoles1

Sometimes you have to save a player from himself. Run the ball more and we control the clock and the turnovers. Cant sack a qb when he doesn’t have the ball.

Kevin Walter

Seems like common sense would tell u to take out all risky plays when up by 2 scores and just play efficiently to keep the offense on the field to speed the game up.they did the opposite and resulted in 3 turnovers and the game being 4 hours long…hope they learn

Show Stopper

Dorsey is in over his head. He calls plays like he’s playing college ball

Peter Rodriguez

Whatever Daboll did with Josh he had him under control with his screwups, that’s all gone now that Coach Boll is gone. And notice the NY Giants QB is now cleaned up and looking great all of a sudden. There’s something there that Josh is missing for sure now that coach Daboll left the team.

Chet the Bee

Blank it! Sling the ball, Josh.

Pete Lamberts

The guy at 11:22 was dead on. We are running successfully, running the ball more limits Josh interceptions and grinds the clock down
