Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts didn’t play Sunday against the visiting Buffalo Bills because of a groin injury that had him listed as questionable entering the weekend.

Running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who was listed as doubtful, tested his hamstring pregame to see if he could play but also was inactive for the game. First-year player Jordan Todman, who has rushed for 138 yards, started in his place.

Shorts is facing offseason surgery for the injury but had said after getting the results of an MRI exam Thursday that he will try to play in the team’s final three games.

Shorts, who leads the Jaguars in receptions with 66 and receiving yards with 777, practiced Friday on a limited basis and had said he was going to try to play.

Shorts has been battling the injury for much of the season and has managed it by not practicing on Wednesdays and being limited on Thursdays. That schedule was thrown off last week because the Jaguars played Houston on Thursday night, and there wasn’t sufficient time to rest his groin from the previous Sunday’s game against Cleveland.

Jones-Drew has rushed for 719 yards this season, with 264 coming in the past three games. He had a season-high 103 yards in his last game against Houston — his first 100-yard game since Week 3 last season — and set up the Jaguars’ final touchdown with a season-long 48-yard run in which he broke four tackles.

In addition to Jones-Drew and Shorts, the Jaguars will have two more starters inactive: guard Will Rackley and safety Johnathan Cyprien.
