One of my happiest days as a kid was draft day 1973. When the Browns drafted Greg Pruitt, I ran outside our house hollering, “We got Pruitt! We got Pruitt! We got Pruitt! I thought he should have won the Heisman Trophy and I could not understand at the time how such a great player was not taken in the 1st round. Greg played so big at Oklahoma I didn’t realize he was a little guy by football standards. He made so many plays his rookie season. The home game against the Steelers that year was epic, one of the best Browns-Steeler games in the history of the series. The play that Mike Phipps and Greg Pruitt made late to save the game was one the greatest non scoring plays in the history of Browns football. Greg scored the winning TD on the next play. Then Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam, who also a rookie, took the Steelers the length of the field in the final minute. He hit Frank Lewis on the hands in the end zone, but he couldn’t hold on and the Browns escaped with the win. That game was one of the best days at the old stadium I ever had. Greg scored twice in that game. Greg was such a great receiver. No linebacker had any chance in hell of covering Greg Pruitt. I was mad as hell when the Browns traded Greg and Lyle Alzado to the Raiders for a corned beef sandwich. As you tell, Greg Pruitt was one of my all time favorite Cleveland Browns.

My favorite Browns player growing up. Met him at an autograph signing. Thrill of my life.

Do it Pruitt…my favorite all time brownie. I was so hoping we would draft him and not Johnny Rogers…who was also excellent in college but very slight of built. I knew Greg was our guy and he was. Ty for the memories Greg.

How can a Browns fan from yesteryear NOT still love Greg?

Duane Lumpkin

I loved this guy! He was a “great” running back! I have fond memories of watching this guy run in big games! And I was at that Pittsburgh game and was among the crowd that mobbed Pruitt!

This format is so nice! Love to watch and listen to that guys. Though I am only a fan since the last 0:16 season, I am still pumped because of the Dawgpound. Hugs from germany
Btw: hard stories from Prewitt about racism in that days and today its possible to draft a white punter from a historically black university. Football doesnt care for color, but for stats. I love that.
