Frazier says Vikings to start Ponder at QB

Christian Ponder will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, coach Leslie Frazier announced Wednesday.

Ponder’s success against Green Bay in the past led the Vikings to make this decision, Frazier said. The Vikings, however are just 1-4 in Ponder’s five career starts vs. Green Bay, with Ponder completing 71 of 140 passes (50.71 percent) for 907 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Ponder was benched in the fourth quarter last Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks after completing just four of his nine passes in the second half, throwing for 15 yards and getting picked off twice — including one interception Seattle returned for a touchdown. Ponder was lifted for Matt Cassel with just over 12 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

Ponder was returning from a dislocated shoulder, which he suffered in the previous game against the Washington Redskins.

Josh Freeman could get his opportunity at some point, Frazier said, but the team still feels Ponder gives it the best chance to win.

Frazier said Freeman had “exceeded expectations” in some ways and has “been better than what we’d heard” before they signed him. Vikings reporter Ben Goessling contributed to this report.
