Film Room: ‘Chazz Surratt Has as Much Upside as Anyone the Minnesota Vikings Drafted in 2021’

Former Minnesota Vikings player and coach Pete Berich heads back into the film room to look at LB Chazz Surratt, a third round pick out of North Carolina, to see what he already does well and what he'll need to improve on in the NFL.

RM Konop

I like his athleticism but tackling is going to need a lot of working transitioning to the nfl level

    Kevin Stern

@Scandinavian Skoldier Probably not. The Vikings actually take care of their guys.

    Rob E

@Scandinavian Skoldier You forgot Kendricks, Barr, ONeill, Dantzler, Tomlinson, Pierce, Irv Smith, Darrisaw, Davis, Ezra, Peterson, and then there are the promising players like Wonnum and promising rookies like ISM, Jones and Robinson.

    Scandinavian Skoldier

    @Rob E all average

    Rob E

@Scandinavian Skoldier You’re funny! And I didn’t even mention Kirk – who’s been top 10-12 the last few seasons – out of 32 which is clearly above average.
Maybe some revision is on the cards before you sit your math finals.

    Scandinavian Skoldier

@Rob E crumbles under pressure. Overrated af. Gets his stats in garbage time. I think you need to stop being a homer

Gettin pumped 💪 SKOL!!

Surratt – Love his speed and impact velocity. Not sure I draft a guy that high at only 6 foot one inch & 220 pounds. His weight in season for
Carolina last year was closer to 210. 6’1 does not give a lot of height to add good weight to. NFL is changing for LBers but 220 is small.

    Nicky Tesla

Yeah he was a reach there. They should have taken Meinerz at that spot imo

    Lorax

Weight and strength is something that can be worked on. Honestly, I thought he may have been selected to fill the big nickel position that Zim likes to use, which is almost a starting position in itself.

Mike theVike

So, Pete… What exactly he needs to improve on ?
You forgot, or you didn’t find anything ?

    Lorax

haha, maybe him only playing LB for a few years? So his immense upside is the only negative, lol

    Tim F

He did sort of mention zone coverage. That is something he will need to work on.

Gaming with Puppetcabbage

He needs to bulk up, he’s athletic, but most NFL players are. I didn’t see anything that made him stand out. He will be on kick coverage and barring injury to any line backer, probably doesn’t see the field at all.

    Donny Don

    🤡

    Rob E

I think that’s a bit pessimistic. I would expect he immediately puts pressure on Dye and Vigil for that LB3 spot and I’d be surprised if he didn’t get on the field as WLB in the second half of the season. He’s already the same weight as Eric Wilson. Bulking up a bit should be a formality in an NFL programme.
He should be a fixture in Special Teams and I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw at least 1 TD to ISM this season on a fake punt.

Hook Mann

Maybe Surratt will be one of those hybrid LB/S players so popular and good against teams that do RPO schemes.

    Christopher Frost

As long as he’s on the field I feel like gold things will happen and Eric isn’t that big anyway their all 6 to 6’3

    Lorax

My thoughts exactly, the big nickel position

    Hook Mann

@Lorax Ryan Fitzpatrick is that you?….lol. Isn’t he the Lorax. Surratt has speed, size and coverage ability to handle that role. He is like Eric Wilson in that regard.

lastridge

Was not a fan of this pick.

    Jay Wiggle

Most random pick of the Vikings draft

    Ground Hog

Same, but if they took him before Wyatt Davis they must have a high opinion of him. I trust their scouting more than mine, so I am kinda excited to see him play in preseason. Hopefully he can push to start next year. I don’t expect much this year.

    Lorax

I think this is a great pick for the big nickel

Colton Ramsay

Looks small for a nfl LB

    Christopher Frost

More linebackers are 6 to 6’2

    Colton Ramsay

@Christopher Frost not talking about his height

    Devin Chapman

@Colton Ramsay he will playa Jabrill peppers type nickel linebacker like we used to do with Kearse but he is most likely a giant underrated upgrade to the nickel defense package

    Lorax

    @Devin Chapman my thoughts exactly

Ground Hog

He wasn’t on my radar in the 3rd round. The Mond-Surratt picks seemed like ‘build for the future’ picks when I expected a ‘win now’ draft. I was a little confused after those picks (I understood the Mond pick). Getting Wyatt Davis made it all better and I like the DL we picked up as well. Awesome draft and Surratt is the guy I’m most interested in seeing in preseason.

    Rob E

Ha, I didn’t see the Mond pick coming, although knew we hadn’t signed a back up QB yet, so it made sense. I thought we might have taken a LB in the 5th round, and was expecting another O Line or WR3 at 78 so the Surratt pick surprised me, but I think some boards had him rated pretty highly – so he was probably a clear BPA on our board.

    Ground Hog

@Rob E I admit I was kinda pissed during the draft until we snagged Wyatt. It’s all good now.

    Jeffrey Sams

@Rob E I think he was ranked on the consensus big board about 3 players later (he was pick 78, big board had him at 81 or 82) so while no bargain vs the board it was pretty much around where he should have gone.

    Rob E

@Jeffrey Sams Sure, but I’d suggest he must have been significantly higher on the Vikes board for them to prioritise him as BPA over some other positions.
I’d suggest that many of the league boards differed a lot from some of the public boards because of the incomplete evaluations. Darrisaw was an obvious example that of the Vikes confidence that the league evaluation was lower than PFF et al. That was borne out by other OTs like Jenkins, Radunz and Cosmi all falling 10-10 places lower than expected.
Alternatively, the Vikes might see replacing Barr as a high priority this season – and less confidence in Dye, Vigil and Blake Lynch.

    Rob E

@Ground Hog Yeah, there were a number of other ways I thought we would go at 66 & 78. A top Edge or WR3. I’m still a bit frustrated we didn’t grab Kendrick Green or Ben Cleveland, or Meinerz and Jaelen Darden!!
It seemed to take the gloss off the Darrisaw master stroke. Drafting a back up QB and LB depth does make sense though.
We are all just fans and don’t really know what their overall plan is, or what is happening with player development behind the scenes, or what the coaches are looking for, and what some of the player evaluations and medicals revealed etc.

Christopher Frost

If you have a Psychic In the linebacker core 😁🙂🤔

Connor Gould

I was surprised that they went Surratt in the 3rd since LB wasn’t an immediate need, which makes me think he was seen by the team as a pure BPA pick. I hope so anyways. After Gedeon was slow and Dye was small, time for another mid round attempt at LB. Excited to see him come training camp and preseason, should be exciting.

Draguu

I’m not convinced …yet . He looks short and kind of tiny …

    Lorax

What did you think of Dantzler’s season? Also, weight and strength is one of the few things you can work on

Tbass2323

Have you looked at any film of him playing against a really good team like maybe Clemson? I would like to see how he performed against them

jartstopsign

Nothing against Wilson but I think this is an upgrade. His ability to read the offense, remain patient with that strafe and then pounce with that athleticism could lead to good things.

Lorax

Chazz is smart as hell, was killing it in interviews and random knowledge questions. He is a future green dot defensive player

Samuel Siedschlag

Nice breakdown, Pete!
