Falcons’ White to miss first game of career

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Hamstring and ankle injuries will keep Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White sidelined for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, ending his consecutive games streak at 133.

White suffered the hamstring injury in the Falcons’ 30-28 Week 5 loss to the New York Jets. He previously sustained a high-ankle sprain during the preseason.

The four-time Pro Bowler didn’t practice this week. White previously expressed hope to return to 100 percent following last week’s bye, but that was before the hamstring injury surfaced. He was officially ruled out Friday.

White had played in every game since joining the Falcons as a first-round draft pick in 2005, with 112 starts. He last missed a game at any level on Sept. 29, 2001 — his freshman season at UAB, according to school officials.

His absence Sunday means the Falcons will be without their two top receivers. Julio Jones suffered a season-ending foot injury against the Jets. Tight end Tony Gonzalez will be counted on even more with Jones and White out.

Teammates still marvel over White playing in 133 consecutive NFL games.

“It’s an amazing streak,” receiver Harry Douglas said. “It’s goes to show you what type of player he is, the durability that he has. I admire it. I look up to him. He’s a big brother to me.”

White is the team’s sixth-leading receiver with 14 catches for 129 yards.

Running back Steven Jackson, who didn’t practice all week, also has been ruled out for the fourth straight game due to a hamstring injury.
