Falcons DT Peters to have Achilles surgery

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Monday night, while rookie safety Zeke Motta had season-ending neck surgery, coach Mike Smith announced Tuesday.

Peters played 10 snaps and recorded a sack before being helped off the field Monday night. Smith said Peters will undergo surgery “very quick” and faces a six to eight month recovery process. It was a noncontact injury.

Peters, a third-round pick out of Kentucky in 2010, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. His consistent production throughout the season could lead to his being re-signed, despite the injury. He recorded five sacks from his interior defensive line position.

“This is going to be a tough offseason for Corey,” Smith said. “He was injured two years ago with a foot injury. He had to battle and ended up going on [the physically unable to perform list], missing some time.

“The rehabilitation time on an Achilles is going to put us close to the start of next season, so he’s going to have to get it going and hit it. But I know he will. Corey is a very tough guy. I feel for Corey. We all do. It’s a tough injury to have. And especially at this time of the season, this late in the season.”

Motta, who injured his neck in practice last week, underwent surgery on Sunday. He suffered a cervical fracture at C1, Smith explained.

“The recovery time, from what I understand, is a good four to six weeks,” Smith said. “And he should be good to go.”

The Falcons will place both Peters and Motta on injured reserve, leaving two roster spots open for Sunday’s season finale against the Carolina Panthers.
