He’s behind two of the best safeties in the NFL for now. He’s got a good athletic profile and Zim has turned a bunch of late round safeties into starting caliber players (Harris, Kearse, Sendejo, etc.)

Give him time to develop.

Harris, Kearse and Sendejo have always been solid in coverage, but Metellus is not that guy. He’s a good SS but not a FS covering WRs. His best plays are when he plays closer to the LOS. Zimmer is a Belichick type of coach where he likes players doing what they’re good at. So I don’t see him having Metellus covering WRs down the field. Especially in our division. Not saying Metellus is trash, he’s just not a good cover safety. Harrison Smith is that guy. I see Harrison Hand being the back up FS though. Him being a CB, it’s obvious he can cover WRs, so him converting to FS makes a lot of sense. Usually corners convert to FS better than any other position and it usually works out well. Also Hand is a great tackler and his only knock is that he’s not super fast. Playing safety he doesn’t have to be super fast. I would be shocked if they don’t play him at that position.

Armen Arutyunyan Sendejo wasn’t always good in coverage, but I agree that metellus isn’t going to be earl thomas out there. But it’s good to have a backup SS and FS on the team.

TheWizardOfOsborne Only special players like Thomas and Mathieu can play both spots if needed. I don’t think Metellus can play both positions so I see him strictly as a SS in the box and matching up with tight ends where he can keep up with them easier. Again I see Hand as the back up FS/ Nickel. Kinda like the Jayron Kearse role. I think he would be really solid in that role.
