Evaluating Andre Brown’s Long-Term Potential as a Top Fantasy RB

The New York Giants have finally activated Andre Brown, and while this is big news for the team, fantasy owners shouldn’t expect huge performances from him right out of the gate.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Giants placed David Wilson and Shaun Rogers on injured reserve, opening up a spot for Brown on the roster.

Brown ran for 385 yards and eight touchdowns last season, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.  However, he played in just 10 games, missing the end of the 2012 season and the beginning of this year due to two consecutive leg injuries.

Now that Brown is back, he’s certainly a player you should consider adding.  But don’t expect him to get the majority of the workload in his first game this week against the Oakland Raiders, or for the next couple of weeks.

The Giants have players like Brandon Jacobs, Michael Cox and Peyton Hillis, and the team has been determined to give them all carries when they’re healthy.  Brown will have a chance to be the go-to guy down the road, but after dealing with an injury like this, you simply can’t expect him to run the ball 15 or 20 times right away.

The biggest concern for Brown’s fantasy production will be the offensive line in front of him.  Pro Football Focus (subscription required) has the Giants as the fifth-worst run-blocking team in the NFL.

However, based off of what we saw from Brown in 2012, he’s certainly an interesting flex play, especially in deeper leagues.  If he can show that he can handle his role in the offense and start to get an increased workload, he will likely become a must start due to his ability to find the end zone.
