PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles‘ quarterback picture is clearer than it has been in weeks.
Foles, who suffered a concussion in the Oct. 20 game against the Dallas Cowboys, was cleared medically Monday and returned to practice Tuesday.
“Nick did really well,” Kelly said. “I know he was cleared, but we needed to see him. I was really happy with how Nick practiced yesterday.
“One of the good things about practicing on Tuesday is you can get your eyes on people who have been out. Nick did a really good job and Nick will be our starting quarterback this week.”
Kelly has resisted naming a starter each week since Vick was initially injured Oct. 6. Vick was described at the time as “day to day” and was, publicly at least, trying to be ready for the following week’s game — a victory over the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After Foles played well against Tampa Bay, Kelly maintained at least the posture that Vick could return until late in the week.
After Foles played poorly and was concussed in the Dallas game, Vick resumed taking first-team practice reps.
But Kelly, concerned that Vick’s hamstring would flare up, wouldn’t name a starter until late in the week. Vick wound up leaving last Sunday’s loss to the Giants in the second quarter.
Although Kelly was quick to name Foles for this week, he wouldn’t go beyond Sunday’s game against Oakland.
“I am going to make the determination who our quarterback is on a weekly basis, first and foremost based on health,” Kelly said. “In the ideal world, Mike’s the healthiest in the world, Nick’s the healthiest in the world, Matt’s the healthiest in the world. Let’s get to that point and we’ll have a conversation.
“I’m getting ready to play the Oakland Raiders and I’m getting ready with Nick Foles and Matt, because Mike’s not practicing today. And that’s it. It doesn’t help me or anybody to say, ‘Hey, next week, when Mike comes back, what are we going to do?’ Because what if next week, Nick and Matt are hurt? I don’t know.”
