The reason why is that the Falcons have the worse pass defense in the NFL – if you treat sacks as negative pass plays. The Falcons allow more than 10 yards per pass play. 10 yards! Fortunately, these dinosaur coaches try to run “balanced offenses” mixing the run with the pass, so they waste downs early in the game against the Falcons when they run instead of pass. The Falcons have a potent offense (they rank 8th in the NFL – that’s playoff quality) so, when teams waste downs running against them, they can get big leads on their own or after turnovers. However, once the Falcons do get a big lead, even dinosaur coaches evolve and they have to pass. And once they start passing, given a remotely competent QB – say 60% completion rate – that team will score against the Falcons every time they get the ball if they use all four downs. For the Falcons to beat a passing team, they would themselves have to score every time they got the ball. Matt Ryan isn’t capable of that against a competent pass defense. If an NFL team with a good QB and receivers played like college and teams went to a 5 receiver (spread) offense and passed every down, those teams could reliably score more than 50 points a game against the Falcons. 11 possession averaging 10 yards per pass play is where I get this estimate from.
