Danny Woodhead’s Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 6

During the course of the 2013 NFL regular season, San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead has emerged as one of the year’s pleasant surprise. The 5’8″ playmaker has emerged as the Chargers’ long-removed replacement of Darren Sproles, catching passes out of the backfield and becoming a point-per-reception gem.

The question is, what is Woodhead‘s fantasy football value looking like after Week 6?

Woodhead had nine carries for 36 yards and five receptions for 47 as the fourth quarter of San Diego’s Monday Night Football meeting with the Indianapolis Colts winds down. Those aren’t incredible numbers, but his 83 yards of total offense are yet another development in his rapidly building chemistry with Philip Rivers.

It’s fitting that Woodhead has emerged in this role after Sproles was that guy for Rivers from 2005 to 2010.

Danny Woodhead is Philip Rivers’ new Sproles … He has now found his Vincent Jackson.

Keenan Allen has become Rivers’ primary vertical threat, a la Vincent Jackson.

Woodhead has now accounted for accounted for 410 yards and three touchdowns from scrimmage on 73 touches. That includes 36 receptions, registering at least five in five consecutive games for the Chargers offense.

Is Danny Woodhead worth starting in fantasy football leagues?

Is Danny Woodhead worth starting in fantasy football leagues?

  • Yes, Woodhead is a strong option.

  • No. Woodhead needs to provide more consistency.

  • Yes, but only in PPR leagues.

Don’t expect Woodhead to slow down any time soon.

Woodhead is a genuine fantasy football gem who should be used in flex spots due to San Diego’s heavy reliance upon the pass. Rivers was averaging 38.0 pass attempts per game entering Monday night and has 203 career passing touchdowns with a completion percentage of 64.1.

In other woods, Rivers is an established star at quarterback, and the Chargers can do nothing but turn to him. With Woodhead being established as one of his most trusted players, there’s only one conclusion to make: If he’s not already on your fantasy football roster, I suggest you do yourself a favor and sign him as soon as possible.

As the season progresses, Woodhead will consistently give you strong numbers in point-per-reception leagues.
