Belichick understands that there are two types of “planet theory” players: essential players who you have to organize your roster-building strategy around, and players whose production can be replicated by multiple lower-cost players with little or no impact on the quality of the overall roster.
The skill of playing running back every down in the NFL is a planet theory skill – you probably only have a couple guys walking Earth at any given time who can pound the ball down after down and just keep coming at you.
But it’s not a planet-theory job like offensive tackle, because you can’t rotate a bunch of lesser-quality tackles and get similar production to a better offensive tackle.
You can have three replacement-level backs and rotate them, though, as long as you are playing them in situations where they will produce at an above-replacement level. You’re essentially getting above-replacement roster value for replacement-level players through package design and play design.
