KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With few internal options to grow their offense, the Kansas City Chiefs were looking forward to taking a look at wide receiver Kyle Williams to see whether his speed could help their passing game.

They won’t get the chance now. Williams tore his ACL and has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season. The Chiefs re-signed wide receiver Chad Hall, who was released last week to clear a roster spot for Williams.

The Chiefs were low-key about acquiring Williams last week, but they were stunned that he passed through waivers and made it to Kansas City at the end of the claims line. Williams wasn’t going to be their top receiver, but the team thought his speed could help a stagnant passing game.

Without Williams, the Chiefs are left with an underachieving group of receivers that includes Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster, Junior HemingwayA.J. Jenkins and Hall.

The Chiefs claimed Williams off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 14.

Kansas City (9-1), which suffered its first loss of the season last week at Denver, hosts the San Diego Chargers (4-6) on Sunday.
