Cardinals Folktales ‘Thanks, Coach’ | Dennis Green’s Rant in 2006 (Ep. 9)

"They are who we thought they were… and we let 'em off the hook!"

Dennis Green believed in his heart his Arizona Cardinals were just as good if not better than the undefeated Chicago Bears in 2006. The Cardinals played like it, at least most of the game, until it unraveled in the end. Afterward, Green couldn't hold in his anger and produced one of the most famous postgame tirades in NFL history.

This is the ninth episode of Cardinals Folktales, a series where we dig deep into the best stories from the Arizona Cardinals franchise that you've never heard. This episode is presented by SeatGeek.

I love this series and I think this was my favorite episode. It brings a smile to my face to see all the guys from the past. RIP Coach Green.

This was wonderful. I remember that game so well. I live in Ohio and I had an early business meeting the next day. I went bed right after Rackers missed the FG. Next morning, my partner asked about the game. I said I didn’t really want to talk about it, but he was like, “Everyone on the radio is.” I went to bed too soon. I am glad to see that everyone could have some good laughs come out of it.

Vinnamese

I love the Cardinals.

We can thank Whisenhunt for railroading Lienart career with the Cardinals. He gets cut a week before the season opener for Derek Anderson. Lienart took every 1st team snaps since mini camp. Unfortunately Lienart never recovered from it

Clyde The Bulldog

This was my wife’s first game she has ever seen in person. How am I supposed to top that?!?!?!?

After my brother and I saw this rant, we were scared for the players. 😆

After the game, this was the longest walk to Blue parking ever. Then to get in the car and hear Denny cement the moment… I’ll never forget this game.

Jason Dunker

Thanks coach. Thanks for your dedication to excellence, thanks for changing a horrible culture of losing to winning, you were and are “ High Performance” always. Thanks and Rest In Peace

The Crypto Kid

As a young Cardinals fan, this series is awesome to see and learn about our past.

This was so great. The rant makes sense with the added context. Also, I really appreciate that the swearing was left in. The video wouldn’t have been as good with bleeps.

Mike Tirico explained what “crown ‘em” meant. Coach Green was referring to the comparison of that 2006 Bears team to the ‘85 Bears during a pregame production meeting the ESPN crew had with Coach Green. The Cardinals hung with the Bears in the preseason so there was no reason to crown the 2006 team. Except the Bears’ freelance writer brought it up. RIP Coach.
