Cam Newton’s Fantasy Trade Value, Updated Outlook After Week 5

Please take a moment and mourn the poor owners who started Cam Newton this week.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback had 308 yards passing but did his best to negate that by throwing three interceptions. He only added 25 yards rushing. It was his worst performance of the season.

That the Panthers lost 22-6 to the Arizona Cardinals should come as no surprise. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports was a bit blunt in his criticism.

Brutal day for Cam Newton and Panthers offense. Not the way you want to come out of a bye. Was like an episode of football follies.

Despite the poor performance, you shouldn’t be too discouraged about Newton. Coming into the season, you knew he was capable of games like this. He’s not Peyton Manning in that he’s not guaranteed to give you 250 yards and a touchdown or two on his worst day.

Newton is the high-risk, high-reward guy. You take the good with the bad, because the good can be great.

The last thing you should do right now is make a rash decision and try to trade Newton now. Even if you’re set on moving him by the trade deadline, you’re much better off waiting until he has a better performance. Putting him on the trade market now will give you a poor return.

Is Cam Newton a No. 1 fantasy QB?

Wait until after he has another strong showing on the ground and through the air before you part with him. That way you might be able to sucker another owner in and make off like a bandit.

Newton remains a No. 1 fantasy QB. If you’re smart, though, you’ll make sure to have him backed up with a more typical drop-back passer. Should you need to scour the waiver wire, Alex Smith, Carson Palmer, Ryan Tannehill and Matt Schaub are all good options in an emergency. Perhaps you could take a risk on Josh Freeman as well, but with Newton’s fantasy volatility, it may not be the best combination.
