Cam Newton’s Fantasy Trade Value, Updated Outlook After Week 11

Through all of the praise that’s been thrown in the direction of 2012’s first-year quarterbacks, the NFL community seems to be forgetting about Cam Newton. The Carolina Panthers‘ field general is putting his name back on the map with yet another stellar season.

On Monday Night Football, Newton torched the New England Patriots and re-emerged as a star fantasy football player.

Newton was surgical, going 19-of-28 for 209 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions with 62 rushing yards on seven carries. That includes a last-minute touchdown pass to Ted Ginn Jr. that sealed the Panthers’ 24-20 win over the Patriots.

All in all, it was a brilliant performance by the former Auburn Tigers star.

Newton has discovered efficiency, and that makes him an even more valuable fantasy football player.

Newton now has 2,179 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 10 games of play. He also has 328 rushing yards and four scores, which is a primary reason why you need to get Newton back into your starting lineup.

If he’s not on your team, there’s reason to trade for him. There’s also reason to be cautious.

Newton is as dominant a dual-threat quarterback as you’ll find in the NFL, but he’s also less of a touchdown machine in 2013 than he was in previous seasons. Mike Tolbert and DeAngelo Williams have cut into his rushing touchdowns, which is better for the Panthers, but worse for fantasy owners.

With such little stability in 2013, trading for Newton is a wise move if the asking price is reasonable. If you’re forced to give up a superstar performer for the third-year star, however, you’ll need to evaluate what your roster truly needs.

Newton is a genuine star, but his style of play limits his explosiveness. Just don’t be afraid to take a gamble on one of the greatest playmakers in the world.
