ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller will have surgery Wednesday to repair his torn right ACL.

Miller, whose recovery is expected to take six to nine months, will travel to Florida, where the procedure will be performed by a surgeon in Dr. James Andrews’ group.

Miller, sporting a brace on the knee for support in recent days, has received treatment at the Broncos’ facility since he suffered the injury last month. Miller did seek a second opinion on the injury and chose Andrews’ group for the surgery. The swelling has subsided enough for doctors to make the repair.

Miller tore the ACL in his right knee midway through the first quarter of Denver’s 37-13 victory over the Houston Texans in Week 16. Miller underwent an MRI the following day, and the exam confirmed what some team officials had feared after the game. He did not suffer any significant damage to any other ligaments in the knee, a fact expected to aid him in his bid to return for the 2014 season.

Miller’s recovery is expected to keep him out of the team’s offseason program and likely at least some of training camp. Miller played in only nine games this season. He was suspended the first six games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Miller finished the season with 33 tackles and was fourth on the team in sacks with five.

Miller has 35 career sacks, fifth-most in the NFL since his rookie season in 2011, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Nate Irving has played in Miller’s strongside linebacker spot in the Broncos’ base defense, while Denver has used Robert Ayers more in Miller’s absence in pass-rush situations.

The Broncos were 6-0 when Miller sat out with his suspension and 6-3 with him in the lineup, including the win over the Texans.
