Anything is possible but based on what I have watched over the first 11 games, they are way too inconsistent to make a run in the playoffs. They will eventually run into a team that will take advantage of their awful run defense. Offense is stagnant. They need to let Herbert off the leash.

Look at the bright side, we win in the AFC west now, unlike years past, if we focus on mainly Defense in draft, and a RT, and power runner, we still have 2 more years with herb playing cheap, our o line is getting fixed , defense is getting close , in next 3 seasons we will be contenders hands down, 1st year new system, cant expect SB sorry

@derek harrington Bengals had good ownership they are à wining franchise like the Bafallo Bills.

I doubt Hayward would of reworked his deal as he had 1 more year left on his big contract (he struggled his last year). As for the OL, he reworked the whole OL and it has definitly improved from last few years (depth should be priority this upcoming off season). I agree on the DL. Tillery is terrible and Justin Jones is overrated. I like Kyzir and Tranquil going forward at LB (injuries are a concern). I think the Chargers finally found a long term head coach but we need to give him a year or 2 to build his roster on his own personnel.

You have valid points but there is a reason they call it the spanos Clown Show. new ownership and that stadium would be packed.

Kenneth Murray is going to be a bust unless they learn how to use him correctly. He is constantly out of position and hasn’t made many big plays. I think Staley’s defense may take another year or 2 before we see it succeed. He needs to bring in guys that fit his system. But i agree, Derwin is THAT good!

@Rich Butler I think Staley is a real coach. I think he doesn’t have player/ that understand gap integrity and how to pass off responsibilities in the secondary. I think belichick is better at getting people with less talent but know what they need to do. I think the chargers need someone like that at every point in the defense on the line. Linebackers and secondary.

So tired of #20 Campbell… he keeps costing us every week. Whenever the opposing offense is in trouble on a 3rd and long, they target our low IQ #20 Campbell. I hate that he’s on our team. I better not see him here next year.

@Vato haha. It does seem like Chargers are transitioning a lot but they will have most cap space in the NFL this off season with a good young core. They are finally free of bad contracts so this off season is crucial with Herbert on his rookie deal for next few years.

@John Baker then why is the Rams defense not nearly as good this year? A lot of the Chargers struggles this year are stopping the run (which has been an ongoing issue) led by a terrible Tillery and overrated Justin Jones. LB’s are suspect as well. I think it’s unfair to compare his experience with this years results. Most coaches don’t come in and see success right away. The guy knows football and has his players believing. Give this guy some time and you will see better results.

@Brendan Cunningham I agree Tillery is not all that, Jones can be solid at times but also disappears. You say most coaches don’t come in and see success right away, if that’s true, then why did Staley see so much success in his first and only year with the Rams? Why in his first with the chargers does our defense stink? I mean everyone’s been saying a healthy Derwin James will impact this defense positively. Heck Bosa has been played every game. We have some solid and decent pieces surrounding them. It’s true we need better depth. But why is this defense so bad at tackling? Why doesn’t the defense make adjustments? Remember in the off season the defensive players were talking big stuff about our defense and how offenses won’t know what to do — that was crap fed to them by Staley. I will say he is a great speaker and motivator — I love his energy, but he’s been blowing hot air.

@John Baker good points and I can’t answer why the defense hasn’t been adjusting. That’s a question I have been asking too. Derwin needs to be utilized more. Is he letting Ronaldo Hill make all the calls? I have no idea but the run defense has been terrible. I just think its personnel issues up front more than play calling.

As for his success on the Rams, its much different when your only job is defense and not head coach. He has to oversee the whole operation and not just specialize in one thing. Knowing Staley’s approach, he has full trust in the guys he brings in such as Hill and Lombardi. I don’t think its hot air as much as it is confidence in his guys. I do agree that something needs to change though.

@Brendan Cunningham Good points. Yeah I’m not sure if Staley is a better Coordinator than a head coach? I mean Special Teams are slightly better than last year, but still stink. I will say Staley manages a game much better than Lynn and I do enjoy his attacking on 4th down, but I just don’t see this defense improving and the offense seems too technical. Maybe he will improve over time, but he needs to grab the bull by the horns and get his coordinators/coaches in check because this team is lucky to be at 6-5.
