Am I the only one who thinks these “Next Gen Stats” for football are completely useless and barely even count as statistics? They’re measurements sure, but that doesn’t make them statistics. “Advanced” stats in baseball for instance are useful and interesting because they give valuable insights into how to plan against a certain player or to make predictions about how they will perform in certain scenarios.
These NFL “advanced stats” don’t do that in the slightest. Knowing Garrett Wilson’s top speed and total yards ran on his first TD may be interesting, but it tells you quite literally *nothing* useful about how to defend him or how he may perform in other offenses or on other routes or against other defenses or how to place bets on his performances, etc.
I get the NFL is pushing these “Next gen stats” because they caught on so big in other sports, but they should table them until they come up with true stats that are actually useful. Currently these are, to me, just a cringe-inducing attempt by the NFL to look like they have the same kind of advanced stats as baseball or hockey.
