Lions trade T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota Vikings | Twentyman in the Huddle

On this special episode of Twentyman in the Huddle presented by Microsoft, Tim Twentyman is joined by Mike O’Hara to discuss the Detroit Lions trading tight end T.J. Hockenson, a 2023 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2024 draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick. The two discuss their initial reactions to the trade before breaking down what this means for the Lions, both now and in the future. After that, Tim and Mike take a look around the NFC North to see where things stand in Green Bay and Chicago after today’s trade deadline before circling back to the Lions offense and who can fill the role of Hockenson for the rest of 2022. Check back later this week for Tim’s full preview of Sunday’s Week 9 matchup between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers.

As much as I like hock, this was the right move

    Old BK

Michael Scott definitely would have made this trade.

David Gerald

Minnesota has a new GM and Head Coach and they’re buyers at the trade deadline. How nice.

    Thomas Watkins

Minnesota who many fans in these comment sections predicted to lose—twice—to the 1-6 Lions.

Fans can’t know this little about football. Can they?

David Gerald

The Lions won’t be any worse on offense without TJ. I think the other TE’s will be able to pick up the slack. Definitely the numbers.

    DK Metcalf

    You’re wrong sir

    Thomas Watkins

Yeah. And their offense will continue to lack a body to go through traffic for a new young QB.

The plan is truly tanking in 2023 and building the lines and throwing a rookie into the fire.

This is same old lions. It’s so dreck.

    Ksalty hidef

Yea they’ve had so much success with TE’s in the past foh

    Yount Freshly

@Thomas Watkins new young qb??? Lol

    Loyd Kline

Minnosoda viking fans, thank for great tight end

Ed Huffmaster

How lucky is TJ, like so many before him who have moved on and will be I the playoffs and maybe a Superbowl.
This is what the Lions do, draft high as a building block then move them out for what ? This is why fans question the owners of this organization.

    Thomas Watkins

    Trust me on this.

Fans wanted Ed Oliver in 2019.

They wanted TJ gone since then.

I literally read people saying Ed Oliver would pull a scooby and yank off his mask on draft night, revealing Aaron Donald. It was the most bats**t crazy thing I’ve ever read.

This fanbase will be fine standing pat with skill players and going defensive and offensive line next year.

They’re in no position to complain.

Ryan Aubry

He’s a second rounder for sure, the only reason he wasn’t great was because he wasn’t in the game plan for every game, when everyone was down he stepped up and made plays so he has the potential to be great it you scheme him in the plan

    Thomas Watkins

Wow! Somebody who can actually evaluate a player and knows the value of a TE.

Please post more. You’re a rare breed around here.

Van Pearsall

He probably wanted to go to a team that has a chance Of a winning season

Old BK

CBS Sports gives the Vikes an “A” for this trade. Detroit, a “D+”.

    Darth Twerk

    Sounds about right

    Mach68

@jai tikk2So the Lions fans should just walk away from the team and root for someone else?

    Happiness Travels

    Bingo

    1 FUNKy Lions fan

That’s cus they don’t realize Ben Johnson doesn’t use TEs and prefers to target his slot WRs . I loved hock but we didn’t use him enough to warrant paying him what he’s probably gonna get paid .

    Darth Twerk

@1 FUNKy Lions fan And used properly. One of the many reasons I don’t like our coaching staff… the game is simple… just feed the stud! Who cares what position he plays?!

Old BK

You can say the Vikes are “all-in” to win this year – but they didn’t really give up much. Holmes should not have given picks back. The Bears gave up a 2nd straight up for Chase Claypool.

    Robert M

According to draft value charts, it was basically hock for a 2nd anyway.

Old BK

Hopefully Tim & Mike take their next opportunity with Holmes and/or Sheila to ask, given this move, when do they expect to compete? 2024? 2027? What’s the target – instead of repeating that rebuilds “take a long time” (actually, they don’t).

todd monroe

I like the move for the team. No frustration here. He is not going to produce at a 12-13mil/yr level (or even 10+). Let’s set up the next two drafts for greater talent. Thing is, we weren’t likely to win a game “because” of Hock. Personally, I could take the whiffs on blocking. Thats got to be job one for TE. Otherwise,…may as well just have a WR at that spot.

    Montarctica

Of course neither is DJ chark. 10 mill a year for nothing.

    mamayl8592

Agree. The positional value, especially for this team, isn’t there. There are other positions on this team that a $12 million+ player would have more impact. For example, get a $12m edge rusher instead. Much more impact.

    NattaNerNutta

To be fair I agree with him not playing to a level to the contract he’d be getting…in Detroit. I think he could very well be worth it in Minnesota where he should be used much more effectively

    SlackBros Inc!

Bet he produce with a team that has ownership that likes to win……..hamp is garbage the whole ownership is and us fans are her puppets she can pat us on back and scream rebuilding smh

Matt Play

It’s frustrating, but I get it… I really thought he was going to be one we build around… but better to get something for him than to just lose him in free agency.

Mr. X

I’m glad they traded Hock because I am a Hock fan now maybe we’ll get a chance to see what Hock can do it just seems like the lions doesn’t know how to use TEs outside of blockers good luck Hock

Zachary Gardner

I know TJ was a good player not worth 13-14 m next year. And with the possibility of 3 first round picks to work on new qb and 2 defenses and great options

Cad Bane

I really hope the lions don’t draft a QB this upcoming draft. It’s obvious they need to go all out on defense. I just can’t see Bryce Young and CJ Stroud being franchise QBs.

Casey Czarnomski

Time for a Vikings Dynasty helped by the Detroit Lions. We effectively made the strongest team in the NFC North even stronger. Give ourselves a real test!

JW

This regime didn’t spend an 8th overall pick on hock. That was patricia. We hardly use our TE. We have 5 picks in the top 65 picks next year.

yaya9328

Damn! Not TJ!!! That’s a huge step up for TJ! At least he’ll see a playoff game.

Phillip C

Happy for him to get off the lions . Now he can live up to his potential . Lion used him as a blocker ,which he is not .

Phillip C

TJ is going to light up the lions when we play the Vikings . Good for him .

Jon

Just like Stafford I wish him the best. Deserves a winning chance.
