Diontae Johnson on Kenny Pickett: ‘He plays with swagger’ | Pittsburgh Steelers

Tomlin went with rookie No. 1 pick Kenny Pickett for the second half, after the offense wasn't able to muster up much in the first half with veteran Mitch Trubisky at the helm.

"We just thought we needed a spark," said Tomlin.

And a spark is what Pickett provided. Despite the loss, the offense felt his presence, something that energized the entire building.

"You could see the energy," said receiver Diontae Johnson. "That's nothing against Mitch or anything. Coach T said it was going to give us a spark and I think it did. He was able to get in the end zone."

Pickett hadn't worked with the first team in game prep ahead of time, but still played with confidence, something his teammates easily noticed.

"He plays with swagger," said Johnson. "When he comes in the huddle, he demands huddle up, come in and listen to me. Everybody respects him. He is a great player. He is young. He is going to continue to learn and develop. It's our job to make him look good and stay comfortable while he is out there.

"You saw when he came in, he was taking shots down the field, taking chances. It's an opportunity to make a play on the ball. You want that. You never know if you will come down with the ball or not. Him giving us a chance shows he trusts us. We're going to continue to show we can make those plays for whoever is at the position. That is no negative energy toward the other guys. They are going to continue to work. Whoever the starter is this week, that's who we're going to roll with."

And Johnson made it clear. Whoever Tomlin names the starter, he is on board.

"It don't matter," said Johnson. "As long we go out there and we know our assignment and the quarterback knows what he is doing, everybody is doing their job as one. It's our job as receivers to go out there and make the quarterback look good, if it's Kenny or Mitch. That's our job. That's all we've got to continue to do and make more plays down the field and just in general so we can keep that spark and not have to have the defense on the field as much. Help them out more."

DJ caught that TD!.. I’m getting real sick of the BS!! We’re already struggling, we don’t need to play the official’s too.
Keep your head up Dionte! I’m really hoping you and Chase will start having big games with Kenny now 🤞🏼🙏🏼
Muth & Pickens too!

    SteelerOutWest

He was out by a millimeter and the ref called it out so we move on!

    Stephanie Limperis

I thought he caught it too !

    SippiBoy302

It came down to the original call on the field. The one camera angle he was in and on the second one he was out. If it had been called a touchdown originally I think it would’ve stood as well.

    bleedingspace

@Chad Wilkerson ur not a fan hahahaha

    Egorgian Baptist

There was a frame from the front angle where his toe looked like it was barely touching the white, and the back angle looked like he was out. It was outrageously close. I’m glad it didn’t become a touchdown, because then Trubisky would’ve probably stayed in past halftime.

Eskeetit Litty

Yes Cam went out, yes Minkah went out too but what about all these other guys on D? There should be no excuse for that!! You let them drive the whole field! Do your job!!
You hold them and that’s a dub. These 3rd downs are pathetic!

Mark Jones

Going forward it needs to be Kenny’s Team. JMO

    Egorgian Baptist

    It’s not JYO, it’s everybody’s opinion

Kenny did energize teammates once he got on the field. I finally saw Diontae make catch and turn it up into 2defenders with muscle for an extra 3 yards instead of trying to run sideways dancing for a loss of 1-2 yards. Hope Kenny continues to start as I think his energy will carry over into future games. Not that Mitch was set up to lose -Mitch was asked Not to lose.. big difference. Kenny is the future so is afforded totally different parameters with which to work. However Kenny just sees the field better and has the ‘room’ to pull the trigger. And once Claypool dropped that catchable bomb int. I think snapped out of the not lose fog.

    jim black

It snapped the others out of their ‘Not to lose’ fog.

    Stephanie Limperis

I think The coaches kinda made Mitch hesitant and he played like it .”protect the ball” ,”safe plays” don’t do too much.He def had a leash on him .Kenny was more like whatever i can do

@jim black this comment is it. You nailed it👍

Don’t forget to get open and catch the 🏈

If there are only two things I like about Tomlin this year, and there are only two things right now….it’s putting Kenny in finally and the humility and team focus the team is showing this year. No prima donnas, no finger pointing and coming together in the face of adversity. Now let’s start winning more weighty downs and build on Kenny’s intangibles to execute as a collective while smiling in the face of adversity. Now welcome the challenge that is Buffalo and bend them to your f’ing will!

Bagupjay

Literally our O-Line just admitted that we were running the same plays im done🤦🏾‍♂️ we all knew this

    Egorgian Baptist

He meant same concepts, not the exact same play calls. If it is the same play calls, it’s unsurprising.

Darnel Miskel Jr

When he says swagger he means a chip ! For a person who never played a nfl snap to come in down and conmand the team speaks volume Kenny will be a house hold STEELER 💛✨

wellsmoon13

I hope Austin plays soon. Maybe he can catch better than Clayhands Claypool. 6″5″ and gets handled by a 5″10″ D back. Juju snagged those combat catches Claypool can’t

    Terry Dixon

Yeah Claypool should’ve attacked that catch, that shouldn’t have been an interception.

    Lee Skee

Claypool, Johnson and Friermuth have been catching bad. Muth is leading the team in drops right now. Pickens the only one bringing them in consistently.

wellsmoon13

being illegally downfield is an offensive lack of communication. Just like the defense screams pass ,pass the offense has been known to yell fire fire when the QB takes off. The only way it should happen is if the QB passes just before passing the line

    John Truxal

Tbf the rpo messes up ol timing in relation to holding blocks and continuing to block…

Keith lamont

I like diontae…that young bro matured alot. I remember when he barely spoke 😆 🤣 he’s becoming a leader

    samuel hoskins

That’s because juju was here and he was considered are leader at the receiver position so diontae didn’t need to take that role

William Hanley

These guys asked the stupidest questions. Every question is trying to put someone under the bus. I could wake them in a different manner and get what we want to here without putting someone under the bus. I feel bad for these players in those interviews.

alex_lo9

Isn’t it weird to think that Diontae has had 5 different QBs in his career

Egorgian Baptist

Diontae and especially Chase need to step up next week. At least Diontae has been a factor on offense the first 3 weeks (he’s had at least 6 receptions and 55 yards each week, and he caught a ridiculous 2 pointer Week 2), Chase has just 126 scrimmage yards in 4 games, and 37% of those yards are rushing yards.

Steelers343

Good to see an interview with one of the lineman

peter dickson

GREAT RECIEVERS PRODUCE.
FLASHES OF GREATNESS FROM ANYONE MEANS NOTHING.

budjordan1

As i said before, we have 2 defensive coordinators, i think that is where the problem is, not the offense. The defense lost the game, not the offense. Lets just have our original defensive coordinator and get rid of the guy who got fired in Miami. They seem to be confusing the defensive players. You only need one defensive coordinator.

    USA

    we see a Gasses Defense

Douglas Smith

What this offensive squad needs to do now is not just scoring, but stacking first downs to keep the defense on the field longer to give our defense a chance to make adjustments to protect the score

NoVa Bro

Lol he can’t say how he really feels 💀
