When I watch Tom Brady throw the floater to Mike Evans for a 40-yard completion. There was a blitzing Bills linebacker that came through and was partially block by Bernard.
I have notice that he is not a good blocker like James White was for Brady when he was at New England. I believe this is why they put him on injured reserved.
Coach Arians spoke of this before about Bernards terrible blocking. And this coming from one who likes Bernard as a runner and pass catcher. He must get better and stronger as a pass blocker to help protect Brady.
Precisely. He was not great at running or blocking. Therefore most teams knew he was a third down back for catching out of the backfield. He probably wasn’t intended to block, just slow down the rusher and go out for a short pass. He was of limited use because the defense knew he could only serve one purpose. That’s why Fournette is so effective, he can block, run and pass very well. So the defense has to prepare for run, pass, or a screen/checkdown. The objective is to spread the defense out and make them defend every blade of grass.
