They tend to work best when they’re used sparingly, and as part of the correct ‘read’ by the Quarterback and the receiver. It ALSO helps if you can get some blocking from the Tight End, an HBack, or another receiver, giving a ‘rub’ on a corner, on the way out.

@Another WorldView Is Possible Your key word is [ sparingly ] I counted 20 passes of the 32 behind , near or just out in front of the line that is all most 63 % of his completed passes? So that is NOT any thing close to that word [ sparingly ] , is it ?

@Robert D. I think Herbert has shown a willingness to go deep, when that’s available. It seems like some of it is just based upon reads, and what the defense is giving them, since they clearly fear Williams and the deep balls. I’ve missed watching the last couple of games…so I didn’t see the pattern that you’re describing. I will say that not much of that makes the highlight reels. I’d like to see them establish the run better, personally. That could serve the same purpose.

@Another WorldView Is Possible Run game is ok , to me ? Run for around 80 to over 100 + yards , should be FINE with this offense ? We have had 3 to 4 games over 100 yards rushing I think this year ?

@Robert D. Mixing things up, makes sense. I don’t see why we can’t be pushing 150+ yards a game, on the ground – like we used to do, when we had LT. Justin Jackson has been known to break some big plays. Being pass dominant makes the team one dimensional, and easier to beat in the playoffs. Having a strong run game forces defenses to bring a safety down into the box. Play action becomes more of a threat. And it creates better/safer down field opportunities.

Along those lines, the WR screens are a bit like a run play to the edges, or a “Pitch” run, that starts at the line of scrimmage.

With what blocking? The right side is not consistent enough.

@DVC SD Were WAS the blocking at [ ALL ] last year ? But , yet , we still hit on a few of those big plays ?And again , you don’t have to hit every one ? But , you DO need to show it ? Ps only 1 rushed pressure & NO sacks in this last game , so he had time .

@Robert D.  We’ve had plenty of midrange throws so far, just look at the Eagles game. Additionally, Hebert had his lowest time of the season from snap to throw, in order to keep the protection up. There isn’t a ton of time to throw when Storm Norton gives up pressure jn under 2 seconds. You know who insisted on long throws with a leaky line? Norv Turner, and it got Phil destroyed for years.

@Chris DeGuide No SACKS & only 1 pressure on Justin in that Eagles game, 1st time in Justin career with NO sacks . But , yet I counted around 20 of his 32 passes were behind, at , OR just in front of the line , that’s about 63 % of his passes ? Also a FEW of these [ WERE ] the call / play , not a check down play . AND is this OL worst then last years ranked # 32 OL , with NO time ? BUT, we still threw for more then a -2 to 5 yard pass & a few MORE long ones , then what we are doing ? 7.4 YRA tied for 13th ,tied for 11th place with his 28 , 20 + yard passes OR in other words around the middle of the pack for NFL QBS ? Do you think our QB is a middle of the pack player ? I don’t , he has a strong arm , use it , SOME ? If NOT lets trade Justin for [ TUA ] , a QB with the talents for Swing Pass Joes play calling ? PS , Matt another QB , Joe just wasted up with the Loins , is having a MVP type of year ? WHY ? Rams are using his talents , NOT wasting them .

The only reason that shot was taken was because the raiders didn’t have anyone blocking that gunner. Essentially Campbell was wide open but renfrow recognized it unfortunately. A team allowing an unblocked gunner is very rare though.
