Man, I hope McVay is smart enough to realize what he has here… this kid offers a WHOLE new dimension to the receivers corp, something we haven’t had before and that’s a big, strong, physical, jump ball, redzone threat type receiver. It’s no secret the Rams have struggled in the redzone over the last couple years but motion away from his side of the field to isolate him then fade to him or throw him the jump ball and he’d be a tough cover.

The Rams are fine at the WR position over the next 2-years with Woods, Kupp, and Jefferson but the clock is ticking for both Woods & Kupp as both will be on the wrong side of 30 at that point. Jefferson, Atwell, and Skowronek represent THE FUTURE at the position and I love… Love… LOVE the makeup. Jefferson preserves the elite route runner receiver type that is Woods an Kupp now. Additionally, he also offers an element of deep threat capabilities. Atwell still needs to bulk up but represents the needed pure deep threat that McVay’s offense requires to take the top off and create the spacing underneath for the other receivers. And Skowronek represents a physical presence on the outside. When the QB is in trouble he can cut his progressions short and go to this kid because unlike the other receivers where once they lose a step their games will suffer a little, Skowronek’s game isn’t built on speed ALTHOUGH… Benny Skow can go!

While speed isn’t the main reason the Rams drafted this kid, make no mistake about it Skowronek has better wheels than people think. He was GPS tracked at 23.6 mph while at Northwestern. To put that number in perspective, in 2019 Cam Akers was GPS tracked at 22.4 mph, during Minnesota Viking’s RB Dalvin Cook’s 70-yard TD run he was GPS tracked at 22.07 mph, in 2020 at the Senior Bowl, Van Jefferson was GPS tracked at 21.05 mph which was the fastest speed there, and Anthony Schwartz who ran a 4.26 40 and was one of the fastest WR’s drafted this year by the Cleveland Browns was GPS tracked at 21.79 mph. So yeah, Skowronek is plenty enough fast and offers a very enticing size/physicality/speed ratio into the Rams receiving room.

I’m just hoping the Rams don’t cut him. The kid may need a year to develop and beyond 2-years, the Rams receiving corp will be in dire need for a makeover and this kid projects to be part of the solution.

    @Daniel Brown Yeah, the roster size will drop from 90 to 53 so MANY players will be cut. What I’m saying is, if the Rams are concerned about the future they need to find a way to keep this kid around. If they practice squad him, he’s liable to be picked up by another team. In addition to building a team for the “Now” season, successful organizations always keep an eye on the “Future” seasons. I believe the Rams are one of those franchises walking the fine line between the now and the future.

    For example, we watched them draft Tyler Rapp in 2019 then Jordan Fuller & Tyrell Burgess in 2020. This is indicative that the Rams knew in advance they weren’t going to be able to re-sign John Johnson so they planned ahead at the safety position. Micah Kaiser is up for free agency after this season but the Rams drafted a Micah Kaiser clone in Ernest Jones. The Rams will have 20 players up for free agency after this season so it looks like they’re planning on Kaiser not being with the team in 2022. The team drafted Brycen Hopkins last year and Jacob Harris this year at the TE position. The Rams are projecting to be $3+m over the salary cap next year at the cap’s highest value but it could be less. Tyler Higbee will cost the Rams $6.4m next year but if they waive him his cap hit will only be $1.2m. As it stands, being over the cap, having so many other players that need to be resigned including most of the starting offensive line, it looks like this will be Higs last season in the blue & gold. So yeah, the Rams absolutely know what their situation is years in advance and Skowronek looks to be a part of those future plans.
