@Beardedsoul78 Not only did we lose Brockers and Fox, but Sebastian Joseph-Day is up for free agency after the season so we really needed Brown not only for this season, but for our future.

@Beardedsoul78 SJD will be more expensive than people think to resign, but overall he won’t be too expensive relative to what people are making at the position. For example, A’Shawn Robinson’s AAV was $9.25m, Aaron Donald is making $20+m/yr, and Leonard Floyd just got resigned for $15m/yr. SJD hasn’t really done much but has been very effective in the limited playing time he’s got. Now, with Brockers gone, he’s going to get a starter’s plate of playing time so look for him to enjoy his best season this year. That’s going to raise his price tag. Let’s just say to $8m/yr so overall, in the big picture, that’s very affordable.

But… it’s only a small slice of the bigger picture. Up for free agency after this season will be TWENTY Rams, several of which are starters including: Darious Williams, Joseph Noteboom, Austin Corbett, Micah Kaiser, & Ogbonnia Okowronko, among many others. So SJD won’t be the highest priority. To illustrate the point and for arguments sake, let’s say in the priority list, he follows all those guys and using ball park numbers, lets say…
Darious Williams $14m/yr
Joseph Noteboom $9m/yr
Austin Corbett $8m/yr
Micah Kaiser $8m/yr
Ogbonnia Okowronko $7.5m/yr
SJD $8m/yr

Currently, the Rams are projected to be $3+m over the cap next year.

In that case, they’d have to find and free up $57.5m to be able to resign SJD so even though he’s not really expensive, he’ll be far enough down in the pecking order that the Rams are going to need to find over $50m in cap space before they can fit him in.

Now, you can always adjust the priority list but SJD won’t have a higher priority than Darious Williams, Joseph Noteboom and Austin Corbett. Noteboom was drafted to replace Whitworth who could retire at any time and it’s definitely possible he retires after the season. Corbett has been excellent since we traded for him, rock solid and he’s young. We can’t afford to let him get away. Do you really want to let him get away? If Williams has another season like he did last year he’s going to be very expensive to bring back. So even if we move SJD up in the priority list to say #4, the Rams would still have to free up $42m to bring him back and remember, these were just ballpark numbers. The actual numbers could be even higher.

So while SJD won’t be too expensive to bring back, being as far down in the pecking order as he will be makes it very hard to see how the Rams will be able to afford to bring him back which makes the drafting and development of Bobby Brown all the more paramount to the team’s ongoing success.
