Daniel Jeremiah on Falcons Draft: ‘The opportunity to take a quarterback is too good to pass up’

Atlanta Falcons insider Kelsey Conway sits down with NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah to talk about the Falcons 2021 draft prospects, and whether or not it makes more sense for the Falcons to draft a quarterback or take a 'generational' player like Kyle Pitts.

Please falcons dont draft a qb please

    CHRISSOFLY •

    Plz do

    Oven Man745

I agree, I really want them to get Pitts

    RebelATL

Draft a QB, but not at 4.

    Oven Man745

@RebelATL I was thinking Davis Mills, he is a Georgia boy and he seems like someone who is worth taking in the later rounds

    Dwayne P

They take a qb at 4

Raj Patel

Ngl some of yall dont understand that matt has played with a bad run game, bad defense, and bad coahing for the last years since we went to the superbowl.

    Faxts

    Stanley Ezen

Matt deserves more respect man fr

    Qadan

Matt doesn’t deserve anything but that money that he is handcuffing the team with

    Lord Maul

Matt Ryan is arguably the greatest Falcon of all time. No one wants to draft a QB just to ditch Ryan. We all know he has amazing football left but we need to have a plan in place before he hangs it up

    Luke Craig

A ton of team injuries too

Nick bagnulo

this draft for the Falcons is so crazy.
1. Draft an QB he not gonna start.
2. Draft Penell Sewell who knows he didn’t play last year.
3. Draft the best athletic TE/WR Kyle Pitts. I wouldn’t blame the Falcons.
4. Trade the pick for more picks.
2 1st round picks, 2 2nd round picks, and a 4th round pick.
5. The Falcons is scare to stay at 4 if Justin Fields and Kyle Pitts on the board. Who to choose?

    Jason Tye

    Pitts.

Floyd Donnelly

If there real falcons fans it wont matter

Floyd Donnelly

If u dont have blocking up front it wont matter who the qb is

    Qadan

I agree with that but I don’t care how good Sewell is you don’t draft o-linemen that high. Dimitroff has set us back tremendously by not finding quality linemen in later rounds. Top five rounds are for transcendent type talent like a Lawrence or Pitts.

Chris lindstrom

What good is a successor when the roster is filled with holes. Look at our rushing yards and defensive stats…picking a QB to sit on the bench is foolish

Kyle Pitts, Asante Samuel Jr, Patrick surtain 🙂

Thomas Herrera

I understand the drafting a qb logic. I just dont like tanking for a QB thats a project and has very little college experience at all

Malcolm Fountain

There is NOT a defensive player in this draft that can help the falcons stop opposing offenses such as the Bucs , Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, Saints & Packers. Give Matt, Kyle Pitts to resurrect his MVP and draft a QB in the 4th or 5th rd in Kyle Trk who has chemistry with Pitts from Fla

    Jason Tye

Horn is a dog, there’s more than a few players that can really help us out. No generational talent on defense but if we can hit on a few players after we pick Pitts with our 4th pick, that would work.

    Malcolm Fountain

@Jason Tye absolutely 💯 I agree with that.

Noah Tindell

Daniel Jeremiah clearly doesn’t want the best for the Falcons. I’ve said it before, IF YOU’RE TAKING A QB RIGHT HERE AT #4, YOU’RE NOT WINNING ANYTHING THESE NEXT 2 SEASONS AND GUESS WHAT? THAT PUTS YOU BACK IN THE TOP 5 IN POSITION YET AGAIN TO TAKE A “QB TO REPLACE RYAN.” Do I make myself clear? Here’s every reason he doesn’t see that explains why we CAN’T take a QB up high:

1. Salary Cap – You’re paying the #4 draft pick #4 draft pick money, and for a QB, that’s weighted heavier than any other position. Getting the best player in the draft and not having to pay him QB money is INSANELY good for our salary cap. With the cap going up in like 4 years, THAT’S WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR MOVE. And I can trust Matt taking care of us until we get to 2024. But for now, you can’t spend money that you don’t have to give to high paying positions this year. Why do you think our splash signing was Mike Davis? CUZ WE BROKE THANKS TO THOMAS DIMITROFF.

2. The Aaron Rodgers Experiment – This can go one of two ways. Aaron Rodgers was drafted at pick #24 in the 2005 draft. Why? Because Brett Favre was BREAKING DOWN. There was a ticking clock in the back of Mike Sherman’s brain regarding Favre’s future, as he was getting tired of seeing him make bad decisions and take punishment while never allow his body to recover. Imagine Carson Wentz last year but you put his age to 35. That’s why you draft your QB. In the last decade, Matt Ryan only had a hand injury that took him out of ONE game, has not lost arm strength, yet in the regular season he’s been sacked 10 less times than DREW BREES. There’s no clock in Arthur Smith’s mind about Matt’s durability! And the second part is look how confused the Packers are regarding their QB situation! They have NO idea when they want to put Jordan Love on the field, and that’s because Aaron Rodgers did well. So well, he won another MVP. What would y’all do if Matt improves so well because of Arthur Smith, he ends up becoming an MVP candidate? Let me guess, you’re gonna say “Oh iT wAs BeCaUsE mAtT wAs ScArEd oF bEiNg RePlAcEd!” No. We finally have an offensive minded coach after 13 years. And another thing. While yes, you can learn a lot from a guy like Matt, he’s NOT your coach. T.J. Yates is our QB coach, Dave Ragone is our passing coordinator and Arthur Smith is our OC. None of those guys are “QB Guru’s.” And for the record, Adam Gase being called a QB Guru is a lie. Even Aaron Rodgers on the Path McAfee said it’s not his job to train Jordan Love! Even the elite of the elite Joe Flacco 😂 doesn’t care to train Jalen Hurts. So looking from that angle isn’t the best option.

3. Terry Fontenot – Terry was hired (after Arthur Smith I might add) with the promise of drafting the Best Player Available. KYLE PITTS WILL HAVE A BETTER CAREER IN ATLANTA THAN TREY LANCE OR JUSTIN FIELDS. He’s more talented and will need less time to develop into the role by week 1. And since Matt Ryan barely ever gets hurt, there’s no chance of us seeing any QB take the field for the starters until what, 2023? The answer is too late. There hasn’t been any regression as far as MATT has played. The Falcons have regressed, not Matt. Terry needs to see that and stop tripping on going to Trevor or Zach’s pro days just so he can scout them 4-5 years from now! I will never understand that concept unless he’s really making the choice of going with Pitts, which is smart.

4. “You never know if you’re going to be up this high soon.” This is by far the weakest statement. Did it matter when we went 13-3 in 2010, had the #27 pick, and TRADED UP TO GET JULIO AT #6? Don’t you dare tell me this team, or that Terry, won’t have the cajones to pull off a trade if he’s that worried, cuz if that’s true, then I don’t want him. And I’d hate for that to be true.

5. Expectations – If you change 5 plays from last season, we’re 9-7. That would’ve beat out the Bears who were 8-8. But since that didn’t happen, we got a last place schedule. With the potential of this team, we have a chance of going at least 12-5. The extra game helps our playoff chances more than anyone, including the Patriots. So if you’re expecting the absolute WORST for the next 2 years, then you don’t take a QB now. You take everything else, construct a nucleus of players on both sides of the ball for a young, cheap QB to utilize and that’s how you let a team go from rebuilding to reloading. But if you actually want GOOD things from Matt and Julio, then you want to see them play for another chance at a Super Bowl and not worry about Tom Brady either! Whether you believe it or not, we have a chance for great things WHEN USED CORRECTLY.

So go ahead and try to take down ONE of my arguments. I’ll respond to ACTUAL debates.

    The Unknown Gem

    Wow.

    Noah Tindell

@The Unknown Gem What can I say? I’m a passionate overthinker, but you can’t say that I didn’t think at all.

    The Unknown Gem

@Noah Tindell Overthinking? You’re using common knowledge that the Falcons wouldn’t pull something stupid. We shouldn’t be in this position to draft a QB this high, if we don’t have the cap to give him to sit on the bench for a year or two. For me, I’d draft Sewell, Pitts or trade down to fix trenches.

    Mike Stand

excellent. p.s. ‘overthinking’ is just one of the few big words dumb people know and try to use to make themselves’ seem smarter(or not so dumb)

Breezy

No thank you. We’re drafting Pitts.

3716anderson

Draft opportunity?? Every year some college QB we’ve never heard of is climbing the draft boards. There’s always opportunity to draft.

    Mike Stand

exactly!!! every year we will have a new group of wilson’s, lance’s, fields’, etc.

PANTTERA1959

Under no umbrella is the 4th best QB BPA. BPA is TE Pitts in the entire draft.
Draft Pitts at 4 or hopefully trade back to 14-20 and get RB Harris,OG,C with the two 2nds&3rds to complete this offense. Make teams score 35 pts to beat you. Use the RB duo Harris/Smith to grind down the clock in 3,4th qtrs.
With Smith calling plays MR2 will have a consistent playbook to run and will play at MVP level for 5 more years. Its worked for Brady for 20 yrs.A good OL makes Brady a pocket surgeon,it will work for MR2 too. Consistency and pocket time make good QBs into great QBs.

Jason Tye

We’re not drafting a qb, Pitts or trade back for more picks.

Sergio Villareal

If we draft a QB in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round we will be doing our team a huge disservice when we know we need Defensive players and O’line players.

Tai Ezenwa

A lot of people forget about all the other solid O-Line prospects. Pretty deep class there. Pitts is a freak of nature you can’t pass on. They could easily pick a solid lineman in the third round. Edge rusher in the second. Maybe quality DBs in the fourth/fifth. They can be quality rotational guys. But just imagine being a DC and having to account for Hurst, Pitts, Ridley, Jones, and Gage. I want my Falcons to instill true fear into the opps. Can’t pass on Pitts, man..

Hi kelsey Daniel whatup good show
